cut subsidy? how about cut the pay of MP…

… so that they’ll know how to save, eg flying economy like penang’s CM instead of flying business class.

… or stop bailouts!

…or as tony pua, PJ MP said, how about checking on corruption and leakage? (read from his blog)

idris jala, the minister in the prime minister’s dept. warned that our country will be bankrupt in 9 years time, if the govt. continue to subsidize us on stuffs like petrol, electricity, and other staples, so he proposed steps to manage the government’s growing spending on subsidies.

Among the suggestions include slashing subsidies for 12 items, which would see prices hiking for petrol, diesel, gas, electricity, sugar and flour, among other staples over the next five years.

petrol, gas, electricity, sugar, flour…. all these are necessities that ordinary rakyat like you and me need. necessities that the poor need too! so won’t it be a burden on the poor if the prices all go up?

well the PM will later on then said ‘change your lifestyle’ so as to live beyond the means of all the BN… no no i don’t mean ‘barisan nasional’ but ‘barang naik’ (prices hike).  really? change our lifestyles? how so? when our lifestyles are already moderate? it is those MP and VIP who ought to change their lifestyles! i already travels to KL by bus, how do i change my lifestyle to travel by…. what? whereas for them, they travel by plane, they can afford to change their lifestyle to travel by train or bus!!

if you are a subscriber to malaysiakini and have read the comments there, you’ll notice many interesting comments that disagree on the cutting of subsidy and that talk about what made the country going to be bankrupt and proposals of what to do not to made the country bankrupt. oh, i think i’d better copy down the comments here.

———————————

comments from malaysiakini:

cala Jala, please do not come and tell us how to tighten our belts when the regime is allowing leakages everywhere. See Tony Pua’s remarks. Is it true that we are subsidizing a hefty sum of RM 1.3 billion of gas for the independent power producers every year?

N Ng The BN government could obviously have been more prudent with the revenues earned from taxes, petroleum, etc. A removal of subsidies must also be jointly accompanied with a removal of the huge tariffs, for instance on cars, where even our very own Proton costs so much less overseas. What we pay here for a Camry, for instance, one could have purchased a BMW in countries like Australia or the UK. Rediculous, really. Has the govt also thought about a more efficient government? Our public service is still very large, and very ineffective. What say you, Idris?

Rakyat Malaysia Another reason for this subsidies cut is probably because BN is preparing for 13th GE. All the money saved is going to be given out to everyone that they can lay their hands on especially Malay folks. BN going to spend VERY VERY BIG in the next general election, trust me. They can’t afford to lose out. They are already preparing their massive underground infantry and artillery – e.g. paying people RM150 to change home address to Kelantan, etc. I heard a neighbor was given some RM200 and being ferried in a air-cond bus during a by-election last year. All these going to take money and the money is coming from RAKYAT and BN used it to steal our right to a legitimate democratic govt! This is a double blow to RAKYAT!

R.Venugopal YB Idris Jala has taken the trouble to improve the country’s cash flow by gradually removing subsidies within the next 5 years and Malaysian should be preapred to bear the cost. An excellent idea for a first time Senator and you could have done better. First, you have to consider the abuses by the politicians that cost billions to the country yearly and you have failed to look into these factors. How much could you save by improving the procurement processes in the government and GLC ? It is always the citizens who has to bear all the risk for the failures of the administrators. Look at the internal processes that are weak or you do not have the guts to highlight. Only after having internal controls you proceed looking at the external factors like increasing taxes and reduction of subsidy.

Before cutting subsidies, there is a solution and the solution lies in Penang. BN, please go and ask Penang CM Lim Guan Eng on how he cleared MPPP debts within a year after he took over from the useless CM Koh Tsu Koon. Please appoint CM Lim to become the Finance Minister. Hopeful123 Where are we heading for ? The standard of living in Malaysia is nearly the same as in S’pore. But there are no subsidies in S’pore and yet we at par with them where prices of commodities are concerned. The price of fuel is double there but the public transport is excellent and very affordable. Look at our miserable public transport which charges nearly the same price as S’pore (mind you with all the subsisides). Imagine how much prices are going to soar if the subsidies are taken away. Private transport operators are waiting like vultures just to increase their charges. Remember the last time bus fares went up by an average of 30% (with subsidies). In S’pore MRT and bus fares go up by an average of a few cents, and that too not too often. Prices of all commodities shot up like nobody’s business when the fuel prices went up. When fuel prices came down – what happened. The prices are there to stay and go up again and again. One more thing – look at the prices of vegetables.

His small fortune of RM500 million should be returned to the public. And at the same time can you do something about the ridiculous taxes on vehicles in Malaysia, the so-called Proton subsidy? Whatever Najib/Idris hope to achieve by revealing these statistics – one thing is clear, and it is because of Mahathir/UMNO/BN, we are where we are at, today. Yes, we need a two party system. That is the only way in a real democracy, that accountability can be brought back into the country. When you have Idris using scare tactics to maybe achieve “submission” by Malaysians, but without admitting the root cause of the problem, which is UMNO corruption, then you realise that UMNO remains in denial. Become like Greece in 9 years, he says; but you have a Santa Claus clown of PM who thinks that Petronas money belongs to him; so he goes to town spending money on a “you help me, I help you” basis. Failed nation? Yes, we are almost there. These stats just prove it. UMNO MUST BE KICKED OUT OF PUTRAJAYA. There are no 2 ways about it.

I am a PR supporter but I don’t think it would be a responsible government if PR is comtenplating to maintain current fuel subsidy. In fact, a responsible government should have the gut to remove the fuel subsidy gradually to zero and abolish high car tax (i.e. effectively asking Proton to close shop if it cannot survive without government subsidy). Malaysians deserve good quality car at reasonable price as in the case in most European countries. This is what we call as Pay-As-You-Use. This would also be an environmental friendly policy as Malaysians will think twice before driving their cars out to do a grocery shopping which is 5-10 minutes walk away. And we know how long and frustrating the legal process is. If we do not start reforming the subsidy system now, and just wait for corruption to disappear in order to figure out if the subsidies can stay, we are more likely to go brankrupt first. Besides, the elimination of corruption is not as straightforward as we want it to be. We can see from the situation in Thailand, that many other factors can affect the definition of corruption, and the execution of anti-corruption. There may be instances in which we have to tolerate certain kinds of inappropriate/corrupt practices in order to satisfy the public, which is apparently not going to be united, and to continue using the very valuable services of the target people. Letting PR in charge cannot solve such problems, unless they want to be dictators.

Why? they have no natural resources but Malaysia was so resource rich and where are wealth? In the pockets of a few. Who gave away toll concessions away? Who privatised LLN to TNB? Why was corrutpion encouraged? Who stole the wealth of the nation? Who created all the white elephants like the twin tower and KL tower? I suggest BN govt start by cutting those unnecessary expenses like buying some stupid airplanes so that some people can earn big time commissions or participating in F1 which costs billions! What can two diesel submarines do for the nation? Start by removing all huge and unnecessary projects from the table and you will find the country will be a better shape than you paint it to be. Barry Wain in his book Malaysian Maverick have correctly said that Mahathir alone had squandered more than RM100 billion. There have been scandal after scandal, starting with the BMF scandal and right thru till the worst scandal of them all the PKFZ scandal which cost the rakyat RM12,000,000,000,ie 12 billion ringgit. The latest other 2 scandals are the Pos Malaysia which lost RM4 billion and Sime Darby which lost RM1.8 billion. I am very sure if all these monies were not stolen and robbed, there wont be such a scenario where the country will go bankrupt. But the irony is many of the Malaysians still vote for the corrupted BN despite knowing that the country is going bankrupt. Now they are going to be burdened with paying extra for their daily survival. Wake up Malaysians, throw the corrupted BN into the dustbin before the country is declared BANKRUPT like Greece–pensioners dont get pension.

What Idris fails to realise is that subsidies are part of the dependency syndrome which feeds the politics of corruption & moral depravity in M’sia. Without the subsidies, what is there to prevent the Ibans in S’wak for example from deserting the BN? Umno will keep the subsidies, come what may, because that’s what sustains its politics. In fact, it will be a blessing in disguise if M’sia goes bankrupt. Finally, we can get rid of the riff-raff from politics & weed out the fat cats, the parasites, leeches, blood-suckers, proxies, stooges & traitors. Gov’t projects can no longer be taken by the Umno elite under the names of various nominees & sold several times over down the chain. Most recently is the shocking admission by our ex-premier & the Father of Corruption Dr. Mahathir himself that the use of money is inevitable if victory in elections were to be ensured; hence the testimony of UMNO’s & BN’s inextricability with corruption. While this surcvey has not been completed yet and the report made public, there is already plans to ‘attack’ the foodstuff and fuel subsidies. This can cause undue panic and hoarding as you may not know, sugar is not available in quite a number of places. Fuel may also be restricted in view of foreseen increases. This is one of the main reasons why the BN g’ovt is seen as no longer a viable and good representative of the rakayt. Too many tolerances of abuses and misuses and look at the state of affairs of the country today? We also no longer command a respectable position within the Asean region in terms of economic strength which has dwindled not increased.

You are think tank, come up with better soulutions rather than an easy and quick target. Look around closely, do we need to support Lotus F1 Team or Pertronas to support the Mercedes Team? Sunstantial savings can be derived from just this one wasteful project. Honda and Toyota are smart and pulled ou while we move in at a time when the world economic situation is bad. Whether the commentators are being reasonable or not, we may have our doubt but for sure you have lost the trust of many Malaysians. Evry other issue high-lighted is being questioned sinically. Whose fault is this? You can’t blame just the opposition for engineering such reaction, please do give some credit to Malaysians for the ability to think in spite of the University Act to stop even our future leaders to be a ble to think! Your wantonness over the past 30 years has created such an impression in the minds of many people especially the younger ones. If you continue with such attitude, you days are surely numbered! You may blame the price of petrol on the world market but surelt you can’t blame the continuous increase of toll on the same reason! my gut feeling is if you persist to keep the TOLL issue under ISA, BN would certainly need to start counting your days at Putrjaya

This is the strategy by threathening the public to siphone since they know the alternative gov might come to power, so no more income. YF Dear Idris. You got the whole issue wrong. The issue IS NOT “the govt cutting subsidy”, the REAL ISSUE is “the rakyat provide subsidy for corruption”. Where do you think all the frogs got their money from and all those election promises? Somebody’s got to give and once again the rakyat has to pay for it. To those who have gotten their free grants and gifts during those recent by-elections, you now have to pay for it.

Not Confused It is clear to everyone that the burgeoning expenditure by the corrupt government cannot continue. It is clear that the subsidising of costs is not economically and globally acceptable any longer. However, if the billions wasted in “consultation” fees and the ritualistic creaming off of major project costs by the well-connected, as well as other corrupt practices were all stopped, there would be no deficit and subsidies could be reduced over a longer period of time. The BN government will never learn or accept this, so it is up to every man and woman in this country to show them the door. Fifty years of corruption has to end – NOW!

Malaysia’s financial woes are the fault of the g’ovt. Too much tolerated corruption at high places, too many wastages, too many prestigious projects, some of which are white elephants today. Even with subsidies the rakyat feels the pinch. Raja Chulan Subsidy on Petrol, sugar and toll reaches (benefits) millions of the rakyat. It is money well spent as it is the nations wealth well distributed. On the otherhand corruption, cronyism, inefficient civil service and other wasteful government spendings benefits a few only. The money spent on subsidy in Malaysia is around RM80 billion whereas the money wasted/ lost on the others mentioned above is estimated by the World Bank to be around RM250 Billion a year. So, Mr. Idris Jala and other BN politicians should stop squeezing the poor rakyat further on the subsidy but instead do plenty more about the other wasteful spending and leakages in the Malaysian economy. Please be fair to the rakyat!!

Habib RAK Idris Jala, when you refer to Greece as the bogeyman, you are actually addressing the educated urban crowd. You know very well that the educated urban crowd know better on why Malaysia is in such deep debt. Its primarily due to leaks by corruption. As the Greece case is now well researched and published, the core reason why Greece is in dire debt is due to corruption. On this note, I agree with you that we will end up as Greece. Thus, address the cause of the problem and the issue of subsidy will dissappear on its own. If the root of the problem i.e corruption, is not fixed, then even by removing all the subsidy, it will not help Malaysia. What is saved from subsidy will be stolen by the corrupted officials as it is happening now. The urban educated cannot be fooled anymore. The only solution is to replace the BN government with PR government for now.

Of late, our government too dealt with this country’s assets and resources – in a rush and hush hush manner. We risk being the next Greece because we allow corruption to flourish, we allow big shots to evade tax and to manipulate markets freely, we allow UMNO to continue playing money politics, and of course, we allow UMNO to rule this country. Anonymous The government must be trimmed in size, increase the work load of each civil servant, reduce the number of bosses, cut cost having meetings and courses which are unending and go nowhere, reduce public expenditure by having any event without spending a dime, like in other countries- having simple straight-forward events without ostentatious ceremonies and protocol, disallow waste of time doing things which are not beneficial to the public or of benefit only to an individual. You should see how many Pengetuas turn up in a school where a Pengetua is retiring and “needs to be honoured”. The honour is doing a job well, not dancing attendance on others at public cost. That can be done in your own time. Just a small example. Having meetings and courses( non-residential) and at government venues where you do not need to waste time travelling a day there and back or pay for food and accomodation.

Joker This govt ‘think-tank’ should think of eliminating wastage in govt spending first. Wastage not only in terms of paying at overpriced ‘directly negotiated’ prices but more so in ensuring the govt spends on projects which will generate future revenue. Trimming the size of civil servants like freezing new intakes and reducing ‘lawatan sambil belajar’ will see immediate and significant savings. Spend less on military while increasing budget for homeland security (police) will see better actual security and thus encourage investment & public spending. Reducing sales tax on cars and/or having a really functioning public transport will immediately put more disposal income in the Rakyat’s hand, thus increasing consumer/private spending activities. In a nut shell, dont talk about the Rakyat tightening their belts first as we have already tightened since Badawi’s time. Govt should spend less and spend smart.
