country & western songs
inspired by simon’s post on top 8Os songs i’m going to do something similiar. i will choose best country and western songs. best according to my choice of course. some songs that are popular according to me) which i like. you will notice that most of the songs are quite old… er… because i’m old? haha. yep, old songs are more my cup of tea. i’m going to list out 10 songs (in no particular order).
1. country road by john denver
now, the no. 1 most popular and well- liked song which i’m sure many would agree with me would be none other than john denver’s ‘country road’
‘country road’ seems to be popular with old timers (like me) esp. at karaoke session. even if not during karaoke session i like to sing this song as i know the lyrics by heart.
2. you light up my life by debbie bone
this is another favourite karaoke song for me but unlike country road i did not manage to learn the lyrics by heart. i only know the chorus by heart.
3. coward of the county by kenny rogers.
i love this song for the story and lesson behind it. i think it is popular with many people too as i notice people quoting this song here and there for the moral behind it. whenever i listen to this song i always feel a tinge of sadness.
4. rhinestone cowboy by glen campbell.
this song has a nice beat to it, not only the chorus but the whole song. in fact i find the verses better than the chorus.
5. 9,999,999 tears
nine hundred nine… er nine hundred thousand nine… er.. nine hundred nine thousand… er… i can never seems to get the figures right. i think it is nine hundred nine thousand and nine million… right?
6. i know a heartache when i sees one.
ilike this one for it’s catchy beat that seems to go up and down.
7. tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree by dawn
this is a touching ‘story song’ like coward of the county. i like the ending when ‘the whole bus cheer’ as they spy thousand of ribbons round the oak tree. *snif*
8. southern night
9. beautiful sunday
actually i really can’t say i like this song but at that time when it was hot, it seemed to be so popular with lots of people. in the beginning listening to it, i like it but after a while of listening to so many “hi hi hi… beautiful sunday”, “this is my my my….”, “hey hey hey….” it kind of get on my nerve.
10. jambalaya by carpenters
this gotta be a favourite karaoke song too i think. many people, even the young people enjoy this song. it’s such a quick lively song. yes i like this song very much though for the life of me i can’t understand what the chorus means… what does jambalaya itself means? is it the name of a place? a person? imagine, i had been singing this song for umteenth years and yet not knowing the meaning! haha. example the 2nd line:
“me gotta go-pole the pirogue down the bayou”
what is ‘pirogue’? then the chorus:
“Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and fillet gumbo”
crawfish pie? fillet gumbo? are those fish? food?
and i suppose the places of “thibodaux and fontaineaux” are names that are made-up?
see the lyrics of jambalaya here, and lyrics of all the songs mentioned here can be found in the same site too, i.e. lyrics download (i have the link too on my sidebar under ‘interesting site). do share your favoure C&W songs, ok.
