writing for herald… and now UCAN too

i had already mentioned before that i write for the herald now and then, espcially to report events and activities happening in our parish or the penang diocese. i’m also one of the ‘stringer’ in penang for herald.

i started writing for herald, i think, about 3 years ago, when one of the herald stringer in penang, a filipino, went back to philippines. he happened to be from the same parish as me (city parish) and he covers events in the parish and also the diocese. since he left, there’s no one to cover events in the parish, so i did it! as for the diocese, there are a few others who sometimes cover the events for herald, but most of the time, i did it, since i work in the diocese.

somewhere in mid june this year, famous popular blogger susan loone introduced me to UCAN – union of catholic asian news, asking if i would like to write for UCAN. so from the contact person susan gave me, i contacted him and hey presto! i had my first article published in UCAN 2 weeks ago. it was about the launching of the year for priests.

yes there is no by-line there but never mind of course. suffice to say, with or without by-line, i will be paid – that’s good enough! i’m surprise though to see by-line for the photo i submit, where in the case of herald, there is by-line for article but not by-line for photos. i thought that photo of mine was lousy and won’t be used. i did sent 2 other better photos but taken by someone else and expected UCAN to use one of those 2 but quite surprised to note they used mine instead.

i knew i would be writing to UCAN already in mid june but no, i did not ‘broadcast’ it to anyone yet. i usually wait till i get my work published, only then i informed people, but of course if before publication, i need to interview people, i got to let them know.

well i have two other articles coming up for UCAN. hope i’ll be able to do it. in the meantime, i still continue writing for herald if there are any events to report. oh, regarding the year for priests, i will expect to see my articles on that subject to herald in this comning week (2 aug) issue.
