lunch for the homeless/street people
as part of our lenten campaign activities, our parish (city parish, penang) organised a fellowship lunch for the homeless and street people who frequents the lighthouse drop-in centre yesterday. (they are known as ‘clients’ to the lighthouse).
(note: if you want to know what is the lenten campaign and also about the lighthouse drop-in centre, please click on the links above).
weeks before, we had appealed for donations in our parish bulletin for the lunch. apart from giving them food to eat, we decided on a ‘gift pack’ of toiletries to them too. it was good to know that there are many generous people who had responded to our donations. all the food and items for the gifts were donated – some donated cash, where we used it to buy the food.
there were fried mee, fried bee hoon, fried chicken, lor bak (kind of chinese sausage), curry puff, fruits, ice cream, jelly, mineral water, packet orange juice . as for the gift pack, it contain face towel, toothbrush, soap, instant mee and a piece of cake.
before food was served there were some sing-a-long. seemed that a few of the homeless people can sing well! 3 ‘singers’ from our parish lead in the singing. there were also some games where prizes of angpow were given.
oh about 80 of the lighthouse clients turned up and there were quite a number of helpers too – near 40. we were glad that we were able to do something for our less fortunate brothers and sisters during this lent season. true to its theme, we did not turn our back on them.
i will not write more here as i’m going to write a longer article to the herald, our catholic magazine. will link the article here when it is published. i took a lot of photos. here i share a few.
