providing beef rendang meal
whoaa! look what i caught – a giant prawn! haha.
on our way to the bukit malut rohingyas settlement, we spy these 2 giant prawns by the roadside, and me being one who love to eat prawns, couldn’t help to stop to take a photo.
these giant prawns are in front of the prawn breeding factory in bukit malut, langkawi. there are also some other pictures which you can find in the url i will give later.
it was a fun and fruitful trip to langkawi. 3 of us church members went and we met a local fisherman there (whom the POHD had helped a lot as the aceh 2004 tsunami victim) who was so friendly and helpful. he helped us a lot in going round langkawi shopping for stuffs for the meal and also in our contact with the rohingyas in bukit malut.
we wanted to buy chicken but chickens were not on sale due to the price war, so we bought beef instead. 100 kg of beef and some other stuffs to go with the cooking of the beef rendang, like santan, onions, spices and so on. we went to a few places to enquire for the best price especially for the beef. we needed 100 kg of beef and that was a lot indeed! we finally bought 5 bags of beef, of which one bag was 20 kg.
there are 1300 people in the rohingyas community in the bukit malut settlement. the cooking was done in one place (community cooking), then the food (beef rendang) was distributed to each families one by one. they placed the food in a big container and lurched around this container around the tents where the families are staying. as they reached a tent, one member of the family, a kid, will come out with a bowl/container to get the beef rendang. (see a picture below).
i wlll not write a lot about the trip here as i’m going to write an article to our catholic paper, the herald. there, i will have more information, and when i finished the article, i will put it up on my blog here.
at the moment, here, i show you only 4 pictures out of the more than 80 pictures i took!
this picture show the fire that happened in feb. this year in one part of the settlement.
these are the tents that they lived in.
