foodie meme

lynnee had tagged me with this foodie meme a long long time ago. i was too busy to do it. well, at that time, there were lots of interesting news to blog about, especially with the attack on us bloggers from almost everyone in the government (including senators and one famous son-in-law).  that was one reason i put off doing this meme; another was that i need to take pictures to do this meme. no, not that it is a must (lynnee didn’t) but i felt as a picture speaks a thousand words, i’d better put up pictures so that i’ll talk less (hopefully).

ok so what is the meme about? smply to pick 5 of your favorite food haunts. course being one who love to eat, i have more than 5, so what i picked here i would rather say my regulars than my favorites. being regulars, these places i picked are not expensive places (e.g.dome, TGIF) but rather they are just kopi tiam and/or food courts.

ok so this mean i will list 5 of the places i frequent regularly during my office lunch hour. they are in no particular order of preferance.

1)  first of all, of course, the never missed ah sai koay teow th’ng at this coffee shop at king street. once a week, i will sure visit this coffee shop without fail. all i had to say about ah sai’s stall, i had already said so much in that post.

2)  once in a while, especially when i have to go to the pulau tikus post office, i will head to the seng lee coffee shop at the corner of burmah road and bangkok lane for the famous bangkok lane mee goreng! there are 3 other stalls there: curry mee, wan than mee and economy rice but i only take the mee goreng/rebus. the 2nd picture shows the big boss, mahbook zakaria, who can speak hokkien very well. it is very interesting to see how he fried the mee – goyang goyang the kuali like mad as though the kuali is dancing. haha. oh btw, i seldom eat in here but taupau back to office most of the time.

3) next is the sri weld food court at beach street. there are ots of food stalls… about 20, i think, with a mixture of chinese, indian and malay food. oh and there are also thai, taiwan, japanese food.

i like this place because it is big and spacious, being what we call ‘open air’ -just a roof over our heads -no doors, no fixed entrance or exit. the best part is free wi-fi is available! sometimes after i finished my food and while i was drinking, i would whip out my PDA to surf the net. it’s so easy to get connected.

sri weld food court is famous for is the packet nasi lemak. the nasi lemak here is very good.  you can’t miss it as it is the first stall facing the main road (beach street) just next to the fountain.i never eat the nasi lemak there but taupau  back to eat. uou are provided with a plastic spoon if you want to eat it there. heck, they even provide you the spoon if you buy it back. the cost is RM1.20 per packet and it has a half hard-boiled egg, ikan bilis and lots of yummy gravy.

the food i like here are such as  the taiwanese food, fried bee tai bak, tai lok mee and a few others. oh sri weld also has a mee goreng/mee sotong stall that is very nice. in fact, i would say sort of on par with the bangkok lane mee goreng.

ok so those are the 3 food places i frequent often during my lunch hour during the weekdays. i don’t go out for lunch everyday tnough. sometimes i bring bread from home for lunch or cook instant mee supplied by office.

no. 4 on the list…
is this place i don’t go quite often but will go if on a once in a while outing with family or out-station friends. this ‘food court’ actually consists of 3 coffee shops side by side. it is at the corner of rangoon road and macalister road. lots of variety to choose here. here is a night picture of the place (taken somewhere from the net).

the last, no. 5

on saturday i work at the church and the place i usually goes for lunch is just next door to tne church – a small quite unknown little corner hidden inside the wisma central building. It is call sl cafe and run by a family. i guess it is unknown with outsiders but popular among staff who works inside wisma central (and the surrounding area), as it is suppose to be the cafe of wisma central, catering to the wisma central office lunch crowd. although the sign here says ‘sl cafe’ but the card they gave says ‘mimi’ something.

I heard that it is crowded during the weekdays but i only goes on saturday, which is not crowded at all.

what do they sell here? amost everything! ok maybe exaggerated so i change it to ‘a lot of things’! the first time i went there, i was amazed at all the menu put up on the whiteboard. first they have rice with dishes. now the dishes are not already there like economy rice where you have lots of dishes already prepared to choose from. whatever dishes you want, you tell them, then they’ll cook it right and then. I recommend their belacan chicken – one of the best i ever tasted! You try it and i guarantee you’ll love it very much.

want fried rice? what type? they have 10 types of fried rice!  for example sambal, salted fish, sardine, pineapple, mamak, tom yam, singapore, jawa. of course they have soup noodles too and sar hor fun too. oh yeah, they made very nice nyonya asam laksa, but only on thursday, which means i have no chance to try it since i only goes on saturday.

I like the food here because they are all home cooked food and their cooking are good as so far all food i order turned out to be delicate and tasty. also like the environment since it is small and quiet, being hidden inside an office building , not known by many except those working around the surrounding area. (picture below shows the inside). the lady boss (mimi i suppose) is also very friendly, who sometimes will engage in small talks with us.

ok so there you have it – my 5 regular (not necessary favourite) food haunts – 3 of them during my office lunch hour, 1 once in a while dinner haunt and 1 saturday afternoon only haunt. penangites, have you been to any of these?
