what’s your employment composition?

Puan Chan Cheong, managing director of broadband technology provider Green Packet Bhd., said firms need to hire people who are "the best fit for the job, regardless of race," in order to compete internationally.

"We employ according to merits," Puan told The Associated Press. "Competency is the key consideration, not racial composition."

Gooi Seong Lim, managing director of investment holding company Crescendo Corp. Bhd., said the company sometimes has no choice but to recruit mostly Chinese and Indians for civil engineering works because there are too few Malay candidates.

first i saw this in aisehman’s blog 2 days ago and did thought of blogging about it but then brush it off. then yesterday i saw it in rocky’s blog. whoa. hot topic. i must blog about it.

what am i talking about? this part of the budget 2008:

Beginning financial year 2008, PLCs [public listed companies] will be required to disclose their employment composition by race and gender, as well as programmes undertaken to develop domestic and Bumiputera vendors.

see anything wrong there? "….. to disclose their employment composition by race….."

why? why the govt. wants to know how many malays, chinese, indians and lain-lain work in a PLC? and why is it only for PLC and not GLC (govt. listed companies) too?

oh of course we know why, silly. the govt. want to make sure bumiputera are hired in the PLC. oh the quota thing again.

but why are we talking about race here when i thought we should push for bangsa malaysia? not bangsa cina, bangsa melayu, bangsa india and lain lain.

oh you silly girl. remember NEP? remember malays special rights? they have a right to be employed by the PLC. to make sure that no PLC ‘cheated’ i.e. without hiring bumiputera, thus the call for the PLC  to disclose the race composition.

so what happened if a PLC does not have bumiputera in its employment? will the company be penalised? will PLC that does not have bumiputera now quickly go all out to try to hire some bumiputera so that they won’t be penalised or to make sure they will get (stay) listed?

rocky’s blog which is apty tittled ‘employment by race’ (which made me wonder so hire people by race and not qualification?), had voiced his concern that it now starts with PLC… will they (gomen) move on to other establishment like shopping malls, and lulu sarcastically wonder why the govt. stop at PLC and not target others like universities and the police force.
