the policy that never ends
ta… daaamm….!!…. introducing the never ending policy! guess what it is? why, NEP of course. silly girl, you whispered to me. NEP is the new economic policy lah… the policy for bumiputera. huh? yes yes i know but since the NEP never seems to end, it is right to label it as never ending policy too – courtesy of former UKM political science professor dr p. ramasamy. that’s right. it was he who coined that phrase, not me… but of course i agree with him.
The NEP was started after the may 13, 1969 riot to give the bumiputera a head start in the economic field. the NEP targetted a 30% equity for the bumis in the economiy field and was supposed to end in 1990… but it is still going on now (albeit change of name) because the bumis, particularly the UMNOputera claimed that the 30% had not been achieved yet. so they said to give it another 3 years, another 5 years, another 10 years… until now, year 2006, after 35 years NEP, is still alive and well! that’s why dr ramasamy hit the nail in the head when he stated that it is the never ending policy.
psst! do you know that actually the 30% target had long been achieved? according to dr lim, the director of the malaysian strategy and leadership institute (asli)’s centre of public policy studies, the rightful bumi equity now stands at 45%!!
i’m sure the UMNOputera knew that but yet they keep insisting on keeping the NEP… or as what someone labei it ‘crutches’. they want to be spoon-feed forever. they are like a big baby that never grows up. worst of all, to them, nobody must question the NEP because it is their rights. if we question the NEP, we will be accused of racial lah, stiring up sentiments lah, not sensitive lah, disloyal lah, pendatang lah, finding fault lah, what-have-you. and of course they will wave the keris at you shouting ‘hidup melayu!’. gee… is that the way the melayu want to live (as according to UMNOputera) – on crutches?
well if you want to know more about the NEP, take note that there’ll be a forum on ‘NEP vs vision 2020’ organised by DAP today at 7.30pm at the selangor chinese assembly hall. i hope this forum won’t be disrupted or stop by the gomen (just like the article 11 forum was) as the gomen will say DAP is touching on sensitive issue or trying to question their bumi’s rights!
