excerpt:

Another Article 11 forum, this time in Johor Bharu on 22 July 2006. Again,
opposition from certain quarters. Will the forum be allowed to proceed
without disturbance? Looking back at the disrupted forum in Penang in May,
Prema Devaraj asserts that there is no excuse for any attempt to muzzle
dialogue or discussion in a thinking society.

disrupted forum: what really happened

excerpt:

Media reports of the disruption of the Article 11-Aliran forum on 14 May
2006 appeared confused and contradictory. Here’s an eyewitness account of
the events that morning.

7.45 am
Police roadblocks had been set up on all roads leading to Cititel Hotel on
Penang Road, about half a kilometre away from the State Police Contingent
Headquarters along the same road. Some people managed to drive in; others
had to park some distance away and walk to the hotel.

A small crowd of protestors was already beginning to gather outside the
hotel. The police were already on standby, keeping the crowd on the opposite
side of the road, facing the hotel. Police allowed people to walk into the
hotel.

this is a very detailed account of what happened that day. do take time to read ya!

disrupted forum: what others say.

excerpt:

Many individuals and groups reacted to the disruption of the Article
11-Aliran forum in Penang. Here is a sampling of what they had to say,
culled from various media sources.

It was the wrong thing to do. It was a stupid act by these people. They
interrupted in an abrupt manner an open forum organised to intelligently
discuss current matters.

I am not afraid to say this because we are living in the new millennium
where we need to sit and talk things over.

ok folks, remember to attend the article 11 forum if you are in johor, ok? let’s hope that this time the forum may allow to go on peacefully and no mob disruption.
