online petition for IPCMC
i guess many of you are aware that there had been lots of objection to the PM’s call to set up the independant police complaints and misconduct commissions and (IPCMC), from members of the police force and several barisan nasional MPs.
later on, we heard that the minister in the PM’s dept., nasri saying that the government will set up an obusdman that would look into the complaints against authorities, including ministers. the reason? according to nazri,
the IPCMC would unfairly punish the police force as a whole, when only a small minority were involved in abuse of power and corruption.
“We found that the complaints were not directed at the police alone but various enforcement agencies, including the road transport department, customs department, land offices, wakil rakyat and ministers.
“It would be unfair to set up a special body to investigate only the police, when it’s better to set up a body which can monitor and investigate all forms of complaints and grouses from the people,” he said.
unfair? how can it be when two royal commissions have recommended it and civil society wants it. the bar council launches a nationwide campaign calling for an independent IPCMC too.
according to aliran, an ombudsman is fine for other areas, but
civil society still wants the IPCMC to be set up to oversee the police.
the bar council had also insisted IPCMC to be formed as it felt it is very vital to police reform. as such, they had set up an online petition calling for the setting up of IPCMC.
if you are one of those who are for the IPCMC, please do leave your signature at the online petition form.
