old school bags

simon seemed to be going down nostalgia lane when he first blog on school autograph book, then on colour pencils and erasers. after that, he talks about drinks vending machine. ahh… school memories.

reading what he wrote about colour pencils, reminds me of pencil boxes we used in school. in those days, most kids used the steel pencil case or the cloth one with zip. then there were these nice cut japanese pencil cases (plastic kind of type… or was it vinyl?) that close and open with a magnet. i remember during my school days only the rich kids had those type of pencil cases. some of these pencil cases had ‘2 layers’ – cool! there were special slots for pencils, ruler and erasers. these pencil cases came with nice colourful anime pictures on top of the case. i used to envy my classmates who had this kind of pencil case, and i think i managed to get hold of it only much later.

ah, and i remember the school bags we used during those days. we did not use backpack like what the kids do now. well, we do not had to carry so many books that made our school bags so heavy. thank god for that. if not, me being a small girl, the heavy school bad would have weigh more than me. haha.

many of us at that time, used those squarish hard school bags that looks like a travelling suitcase. here is a picture of the school bag i used to use! imagine! after all the years, i still have it. it was used to keep my first-day-cover collection and popped under the bed. you notice my initial there? (LLCY – lucia lai, plus my chinese name). you see the bag is exactly like a suitcase eh? it has those kind of flip buttons for you to open. i don’t know what material the bag is made of… i’m hopeless at this type of thing (like the japanese pencil case… don’t know what material too!).

the second picture here shows the inside of the same bag. there is a small pocket there, see, good for putting in small items like ruler or notebook. the inside is a bit worn out – but of course since it was decades ago! i remember those days, most of my school mates did used this kind of bags, but theirs were mostly brown in colour, and more squarish in shape. oh, i used this school bag when i was in primary school. don’t ask how many years ago, ok, because you know, with that what will be revealed too. haha.

in my lower secondary school, i used the shoulder sling bag made of cloth – made by my mother. good to be used as apart from slinging them on the shoulder, if i found it to be too heavy, i can always clasp the bag with both hands instead.

when i was in upper secondary school, i remember those denim sling or hand-held bags were popular so my parents bought one for me. i had the hand-held one, where the handle was long enough to be slung too, if i want to., but most of the time i carried it with both hands clasping the bottom and side and holding it to my chest! that was when the bag was heavy. in those days, i never see any of my school mates carried backpack bags as school bags. probably we wouold think it strange if we see one carrying it, thinking she/he were going for a hike or wha – just like what school kids nowadays would feel it strange that during my time, we carried those travelling kind of bags to school!
