international women’s day

today is international women’s day.

Established in 1977 by the United Nations, this special day provides an opportunity to celebrate the progress made to advance equality for women and to assess the challenges that remain. This special day also provides an opportunity to consider steps to bring about equality for women in all their diversity.
taken from swc-cfc. also read about IWD from the united nations website (picture above was taken from this UN website) and wikipedia.

locally, three women’s groups spoke up on what were there wish-list for international women’s day.

not surprising that one of women’s aid organisation (WAO) wish-list is that for malaysian women with foreign husbands to claim the same rights as malaysian men with foreign wives, i.e. to be able to be confered citizenship status to their children and foreign spouses.

many women had already raised this matter numerous times – that there is discrimination against women with foreign husbands. if i’m understand correctly, another matter is that foreign wives living in malaysia are not allowed to work, while foreign husband sin malaysia are allowed to work.

all women’s action society (AWAM) wish-list is so general, might as well don’t make them.

sisters in islam (SIS) hit home directly with their 2 wish-list that touches on the prime minister’s vision and the syariah law.

one of the best website on women, i found out is i-village. i came across this website years ago, before we even heard of blogging. i signed up as a member at i-village and visited the website often. as a member, i received updates on women’s issues, which is what the website is all about.

i wonder what happened to the local i-asianwomen. i try to log in but can’t. it was quite a good website. i had joined some contests from them and won something once.

there is also an interesting website that features distinguished women, past and present. on this internaional women’s day, go and read about these distinguished women.
