ramadan turning commercial

found this in the morning paper today and it is something i would like to highlight, and perhaps generate discussion.

a comment by shah adyll dadmeah says that he is sad to see ramadan turning commercial.

quote:
“It is worrying for Muslims to see Ramadan, the month when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, turning into a spending and feasting fest.

A furniture shop advertises its “Ramadan Supervalue” sales, a shopping mall promotes a “Buka Puasa Contest”, and hotels and holiday resorts nationwide beckon customers with Ramadan buffets that cost up to RM60 per head. ”

he rightly said that it has become a trend in recent years to use ramadan as a gimmick to beef up sales of products and services.

well, not surprising. ramadan is becoming like the christmas season. christmas, as many are aware had been commercialised too. how sad to see people making money out of religious occasions. sad… but on the other hand, i guess thist is the reality of the world. we don’t like it but it happens. as cmos pointed out in comments in one of my post, ‘to talk is wrong… to not talk is wrong‘, “the world sucks but that’s the way it is.”

yes they have to do what they have to do to cari makan but let’s hope they do not go overboard.

what about those ramadan market/bazaar that sprouts out during the ramadan month? many of these are approved by the authorities, with special places for them. i blog on the ramadan market once here. i guess these are ok as they are only supplying food for muslims when they break fast. many of them have no time or tired to cook for breaking fast, so these ramadan market serve as an alternative for them… and of course for non muslims too. many non muslims just love to patronise these ramadan markets as this is the only time they can find lots of malay food on sale at one place. i have yet to visit the one near my house – bayan baru mosque. i will do so next week but being there during the night, taking photos will prove a problem. well…i mean problem for a beginner photographer for me lah.
