penang beach – haven for endangered sea turtles?

Conservationists want to turn a popular Malaysian beach hit by the tsunami into a protected nesting area for endangered sea turtles, which hatched there for the first time in over a decade — probably because of a drop-off in tourists after the disaster.

it was said that the mother turtle nested at the beach probably because fewer people visited the beach after the tsunami disaster. hence, the conservationist wanted to turn the area into a nesting area for the turtles.

now, now, don’t we all know that people have short memories? yes, no doubt now there are fewer people visiting the beach but in no time at all, it’ll be back to the same as before – there’ll be lots of people visiting the beach. and that area is an area that is very popular for tourists, swimmers, picnickers, so i don’t think it is wise to turn it into a nesting are for the turtles. further, who is to guarantee that the area will be protected/taken care of, to make sure there are no disturbance to the turtles or poachers stealing their eggs?

i don’t know… i feel that since penang is famous for its beaches, so let’s leave the beaches for people and not turtles… unless there is a guarantee that the place when turn into a turtle haven, will be protected.
