say no to zoos!!

on 10 nov., bernama reported that:

A massive 540 animals, or about 20 per cent, of the nearly 3,000 animal population at the National Zoo died over a two-year period due to lack of professional veterinarian care.

read the whole article here and here.

i was quite perturbed on reading this because for one thing i am all along what you call ‘anti-zoo’. i believe zoo shouldn’t exist at all. i believe zoo is nothing but a prison for animals. i believe animals should be left free and not holed up in so called zoo for humans to gawk at. how would you like it, if it is the reverse…. you were imprisoned in some small (ok maybe big… but still not natural) enclosures, and the animals came to gawk at you?

i believe too people shouldn’t keep birds in cages as pets or fishes as pets in aquariums. birds should be left free to flap their wings, to fly around in the sky. likewise, fishes should be free to swim in the wide ocean/sea, instead of being imprisoned in a tiny 100cm by 60cm box, just swimming up down, up down, left right, left right.

i don’t know how some people can say that looking at nice fishes swimming about in the aquarium in your house can be good therapy. to me it would have the opposite effect! when i look at fishes in aquarium, i’ll think….. how pitiful…. in a small rectangle box… day in day out…. just going up down up down, left right left right day in day out in the same place. it depressed me!

if humans yearn to be free, don’t you think animals (include birds and fishes of course) yearn for freedom too?
