vote BN? (read that as UMNO). they’ll confiscate your holy books!
enough is enough. say no to UMNO. no no, no UMNO! no to BN! um… UMNO is BN, BN is UMNO, so no to UMNO.
from malaysiakini:
On Jan 28, missionary Juliana Nicholas returned from a trip to the Philippines carrying with her two boxes containing 32 bibles meant for her church group.
Upon arrival at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Kuala Lumpur, she was told to declare and open the contents of the boxes.
Having done so - and despite showing them a letter from her parish priest stating the texts were for use by the church - Nicholas was shocked to be hear subsequently that the bibles would be “referred" to the Internal Security Ministry’s Publications and Al-Quran Texts Control Division.
gee, so the bible is consider a threat to internal security of the country? in what ways? don’t tell me, they are scared the bible might fall into the hands of muslims, and muslims will get confused when reading it?
wait a minute… it’s not only the bible but even school children books are consider as threat to the country!
Earlier this year, the Internal Security Ministry confiscated English language Christian children’s books said to contain offensive caricatures of prophets from several bookshops in three states.
the reason given was that these caricatures might offend the sensitivities of muslim. sensitivities of muslim? what about the sensitivities of non muslim? they don’t count as this is UMNO led country!
it suddenly occurs to me - hishamuddin raising the keris during the UMNO general assembly. although many of us, esp. chinese, had said he shouldn’t do it, yet he was stuborn and said he will do it every year - did he think of our sensitivities then? not at all!
coming back to the confiscated bibles (which eventually were returned), go to bob’s blog to read the press statement from the council churches of malaysia and the christian federation or malaysia.
vote wisely, especially christians, if you don’t want to see your religous books being confiscated, your religious rights of practise being slowly, subtly eroded by UMNO.
say no to UMNO! say no to BN as a vote for any of the BN parties will be a vote for UMNO.

I for one do not see these kind of patchy spontaneous albeit quite regular so-called religious infringements as a govt sponsored conspiracy to Islamise the country, but rather a terrible case of little napoleons flexing their tiny muscles and shooting all these sparks to test waters and as a diversion strategy for something sinister ( wait for zorro or yourself to unmasked). Oh its always personal and something to do with corruption that sort of things.
so please do not be unduly alarmed, coz its some politically motivated schemes like a sandiwara. ( but still must be alert , many red herrings flying around lately)
having said that happy new year !

toniXe “I for one do not see these kind of patchy spontaneous albeit quite regular so-called religious infringements as a govt sponsored conspiracy to Islamise the country”.
There may be no planned conspiracy as such but given there is no forthright repudiation by the Administrations of the actions of these minor (sometimes major) functionaries, over time they gain the force of standard practice.
Take the example of the seized Christian children’s books. Bookshop owners normally don’t want any trouble from the govt, so over time you will find fewer and fewer bookshops willing to carry stock of any non-Muslim religious books. Superficially the Administration can say “we respect all religions” but in real practical terms , the freedom of non-Muslims to practice their religion has been curtailed.
Religious freedom includes the right to access books and writings on your religion and to give children guidance on religion. That right has been restricted in a real way.

Lucia…..time for chrisraf?….christians marching to stand for their rights? but chances are our religious leaders will take this whole thing as a “cross” to bear. Be humble and go to Heaven. A very convenient stance that would encourage further “persecution” of Christians, ad infinitum.

yes, as kittykat responded, we need to be alarmed!

chrisraf? nah. don’t think so. beside there are people already who complained about hindraff being race based and now chrisraf? it’s religion based! but i do know what you mean - time for christians to stand up for their rights… to bravely show it. anyway, lately, if you notice, christian groups do speak up and we do see them standing up too, like how we see some churches or groups started to sue the gomen! at least they are speaking up and not keep quiet.

well, to characterise it as an UMNO problem in a sense isn’t fair. the problem seem to be the kdn officers who take the law into their own hands until there’s an outcry and datuk fu slaps their wrists. this is certainly what happened in the case of the seized children’s books, and earlier with the ‘restricted’ books.
even with a change in government, won’t the same civil servants still be working for the KDN and harbouring the same bigoted attitudes? the real task is to remain vigilant and to make sure that every time books are seized or censored or banned their is a reaction.
a very happy new year by the way

Happy Chinese New Year, Lucia!
I fully agreed with KK46. Ultimately the Gomen has to shoulder the blame for the serial infringements. It’s the one who set the tone and nature of the policy ; the rest derive their actions based on it.

er… well… in a way you are right to state that it wasn’t an UMNO problem not directly maybe but indirectly, it wasn’t really wrong to blame them, because as kittykat and wits0 had pointed out, it’s the gomen (UMNO!) who set the tone and nature of the policy.
thanks for the wish. (thanks to wits too… ahh but you got it wrong).
