herald in bahasa – 2 issues together

last week’s herald (11 jan), there was no bahasa section… because the gov’t banned herald from publishing in bahasa, but then the gov’t flipped flopped and said, no they didn’t ban herald from publishing in bahasa… so this week’s herald (18 jan), herald’s bahasa issue was out… together with its 11 jan issue!

the 11 jan issue front-page:
heading which read ‘church wants the ban of the bahasa publication in the herald canceled’.

then the flipped floppe, so the 18 jan issue front-page said:
‘gov’t withdraw ban on bahasa section for herald

another crazy thing from the gov’t – the first letter from the home ministry which ban the bahasa section, one of the condition is that herald should put on its front-page ‘for non muslim only;’. the editor, fr. lawrence had objected because it said already under the masthead it was printed ‘the catholic weekly’ so it is understandable it is for catholic only… BUT the second letter from the home ministry which gave permission back to herald to publish in bahasa, contained the condition that herald should publish on the front page the word ‘limited’. excerpt from the letter:

di halaman hadapan penerbitan ini, tertera perakataan ‘TERHAD’ yang membawa maksud penerbitan ini adalah terhad untuk edaran di gereja dan kepada penganut kristian sahaja.

gosh! isn’t that crazy!! what’s the point of putting in ‘limited’ when it is already a known fact that it is limited (only 12,000 copies) and sent to churches for sale only. i really can’t understand the mentality of the home minister!!

even with the first condition ‘for non muslim’  (before it flipped flopped to ‘limited’, soudns so silly and laughable to me. as if with those words printed, muslim dare not pick up the paper if they happen to see it? grr! dunno lah. don’t want to talk further of the home ministry antics because i get so geram talking about it.

ok, in this 18 jan. issue of the herald, there was a mention of this news of the silliness of the home ministry in banning the bahasa publication and in not allowing the word ‘allah’ captured world attention! the news appears in many news agencies.  this is from the herald, showing the mastheads of the international press which carries the news of the herald’s dilemna.

home ministry – so arrogant! (re: herald permit)

quote from malaysiakini – ‘herald sweats on status of annual permit‘:

Wire agency Reuters quoted Deputy Home Minister Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh as saying: "Until Dec 31, we are not going to announce anything. There is plenty of time till them. Let them wait."

that was from the deputy home minister. earlier…

The Home Ministry, when contacted today, said the application for renewal of the Herald permit is still being processed.

Publications Control and Al-Quran Texts Unit senior officer Che Din Yusof said: "The ministry is reviewing thousands of publishing permits around this time, and we have to do it quickly.

Herald will know whether it is successful in its application before its permit expires.”

huh? herald’s permit expires on dec. 28 now it is already dec. 18 – only 10 days to go. are they going to wait till last minute – on dec. 27 – to inform herald whether the permit is renewed? why wait till last minute? herald is a publishing company. herald needs to work. there are staff there. the staff needs to work. why purposely wants to let ‘herald sweat’?  (as malaysiakini put it).

than what was this about the deputy home minister who arrogantly said "Until Dec 31, we are not going to announce anything. There is plenty of time till them. Let them wait."

dec. 31? but herald’s permit expire on dec. 28 why wait till dec. 31?

"let them wait"? see, mr DHM is really wanting herald to sweat it out!

i wonder is this how home ministries in other countries work? wait till last minute?

fr. lawrence, the editor of herald, fear that the permit may not be renewed. he had said:

"I cannot understand all the fuss as the Herald is only being sold in churches and not to the public. We have a limited (print run that) specifically caters to Roman Catholics."

yeah, why all the fuss indeed? herald is not sold in public.the  herald are sent to all catholic churches in the country and the church then sells them inside the church to its parishioners.

Lawrence said the newsletter covers political and current affairs and that the ministry should not impose restrictions or stop the publication.

"We ran issues on the election to encourage our congregation to vote. Similarly, we ran an issue on the Internal Security Act. These are of public interest and not only highlighted by us, but the media as well," he said.

"Why are they taking action against us? Why are they keeping it to the very last minute (to tell us) whether or not the permit will be renewed? I hope they will inform us early."

i remember many months back the home ministry had issued warning to herald not to write on politics. it said that herald should stick to religion matters only (the HM’s own interpretation of religion). it’s so ridiculous!

i really hope herald’s permit will be renewed. there’s no reason for the home ministry not to. i had mentioned before many times, i contribute articles to herald, so i do want to see herald continuing its publication.

here is the full article from malaysiakini.

Will the Dec 28 edition of the

Herald-The Catholic Weekly be the last? This is the question on the mind of Father Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the weekly newsletter.

the heraldWith the annual publishing permit expiring at month’s end, the Home Ministry has yet to indicate if this will be renewed.

"Our last publication will be on Dec 28, just after Christmas, and I am worried it could be our last," Lawrence said when contacted.

"I cannot understand all the fuss as the Herald is only being sold in churches and not to the public. We have a limited (print run that) specifically caters to Roman Catholics."

The newsletter’s Bahasa Malaysia version caters for indigenous people in Sabah and Sarawak, but the weekly is also published in English, Chinese and Tamil. It has a weekly circulation of 14,000 and an estimated readership of 50,000.

Herald had run into difficulties with the authorities late last year over the use of the word ‘Allah’ in referring to ‘God’ in Bahasa Malaysia. It is currently embroiled in a civil suit against the government over the order.

herald judicial review decision 050508 father lawrence andrew porres royanLawrence (left in photo) said the newsletter covers political and current affairs and that the ministry should not impose restrictions or stop the publication.

"Why are they taking action against us? Why are they keeping it to the very last minute (to tell us) whether or not the permit will be renewed? I hope they will inform us early."

On the progress of the court case, Lawrence said it is expected to resume in February to hear the applications of the interveners.

‘Thousands of applications’

The Home Ministry, when contacted today, said the application for renewal of the Herald permit is still being processed.

show cause letters and warnings is an insult to christianity

UPDATED with press statement from the christian federation of malaysia (CFM). scroll down to read.

two days ago i posted martin jalleh’s article ‘home minister very at home with his ignorance‘. he had called me up in the morning on that day (wednesday), to ask for my email to send me the article. so immediately after 5.00pm that day, i quickly posted it in my blog and also send to beritamalaysia. i then notice it appeared in lim kit siang’s blog too and yesterday i spy it the letter’s page of malaysiakini. good that it appeared in malaysiakini, since it is a popular site and widely read by all, even by many of the ministers.

martin’s article suddenly reminds me of a ‘warning’ letter my colleague, stanley, wrote to the PM and the home minister, which i’m going to share with you. it’s a good letter except… er… i don’t really like the ‘warning’ tone.

16th August 08

Dear Minister,

SHOW-CAUSE LETTER AND WARNINGS IS AN INSULT TO CHRISTIANITY

Referring to the recent threats and warning to HERALD PUBLICATION by the Home Ministry, that it will revoked the license permitted to Herald, It is an insult to Christianity by stopping the publication from reporting the truth.  Christianity speaks for justice, truth, love and peace. Justice, Truth, love and peace was preached and practiced by JESUS him self. Therefor, threatening, banning or stopping this character-ism or Christian values from taking place is an challenge and insult to Christianity and it`s teachings.

I warn the Home Ministry and the ruling government not to interfere with the teachings of  Christianity and challenge our rights. Under Article 11 (3) of the federal Constitution, all humans are protected of their right to freedom of expression and speech. Therefor, no law can over write the Federal Constitution. The priest and bishops of the Catholic Church is God`s anointed and chosen one.  It is their responsibility to educate and advice the followers of Jesus Christ in any matter including politics, governing, education, family, religion and more. Herald is a way of communication to the thousands of Catholics nation wide.

I again warn the Home Minister not to underestimate or insult the Wisdom and holy thoughts of our priest and bishops which  is given by Allah.  The Home Ministry need not advise or set rules for the Herald Publication as it is fully a Christian Publication under the guideline’s and principles of  the Holy Bible for the Christian community. The report on the Permatang Pauh by-election is a must for the publication as it is part of the Christian teachings "Governing and Leaders".  Christianity and governing cannot be separated as it is part of the holy bible from the very beginning it self. Stories of Rulers and governments appears in the Holy Bible many time educating it`s followers on the teaching of the Church. We have every right to practice the teachings of our religion freely without limitation or rules set by the Home Ministry.

The story of an Egyptian journalist who converted to Christianity is an testimony for the Christians. Such testimony is for the glory of Allah. No Ministry or Authority can stop anyone from testifying the truth, for the Glory of Allah. I called upon the Home Minister for an open apology and the ruling government to show respect on the teachings and belief of other religions in Malaysia in order to maintain peace and harmony in this multi racial society for the benefit of all it`s rakyat. Continuous unacceptable remarks by the Home Ministry on the Herald Publication may lead to stages of protest and demonstrations nation wide. Let us together defeat injustice, lies and hatred in this nation which is full of love from Allah. Peace be with you

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ‘SHOW CAUSE’ LETTER ISSUED TO THE HERALD

The Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) regards the three warning letters sent by the Home Affairs Ministry to the publishers of the Herald as unjustified and an infringement of the right to circulate news within once’s own religious community, a right guaranteed by our Federal Constitution (Artilce 11).

Christians believe that all of its life, in its political, economical, social, cultural and religious aspects come under the sovereignty of God. Therefore, Christians have a duty to educate its members to discern God’s will and purpose by writing and publishing articles in such newsletters.

Furthermore, the weekly news contained in the Herald is intended for Catholics Christians who are regular Sunday worshipers, in order to help them relate their faith to wider concerns and to pray effectively for God’s blessings and guidance in one’s life, nation and the world.

The Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) calls upon the Home Affairs Ministry to unconditionally withdraw the ’show cause’ letters and grant Herald their renewable publishing permit. Should there be matters for clarification, it should be resolved rationally and reasonably through face to face dialogue.

prayer for permatang pauh (warning from home ministry to herald)

from anil netto’s blog:

The Herald, a Catholic weekly published in Malaysia, is under further pressure from the Home Ministry, which will be scrutinising its forthcoming editorial on the Permatang Pauh by-election. The edition will reach the churches in the peninsula this weekend.

“The editorial is only asking people to pray for a just and fair by-election. Can’t we Christians ask fellow Christians to pray? Is that against the law?” Herald editor Fr Lawrence Andrew, SJ was quoted as saying.

The paper was given three warning letters before receiving a show-cause letter last month. Its licence could be suspended if its latest editorial displeases the Home Ministry, which feels the paper should stick to “religion” – according to the Ministry’s understanding of the term.

and if you continue reading, you’ll be able to read report from the star and the sun in the same post (together with some related posts at the bottom).

yes, what is so wrong about praying for the by-election?? the home minister’s (arggh!! syed albar again!!)    brain must have gone for foreign holiday and never returned. in fact, last week at our office monthly prayer when we had this spontaneous prayer intention, while others pray for sick and suffering, for the church, for thier work and so on, i prayed thus "we pray for our country, especially for the coming by election in permatang pauh and for our merdeka day, that….."

a good christian should be concerned over the country’s current happening and should pray pray for them!! similiarly, a christian publication has the right to touch on the country’s current politcal and social matters and urged the readers to pray for a particular issue. if we christians overlook all these matters, what kind of christians are we??

as some of you are aware, i write for the herald quite often and i would be very very disappointed if herald is suspended… on a mere editorial that calls on the people to pray! that would be very silly, don’t you think so? it’s not that the prayer say "we pray that anwar will win"!!  ok i already got hold of the coming issue of herald (17 aug) and here is the ediotorail, followed by the prayer for you to read and you judge for yourself anything wrong with it or not!!

DAY OF RECKONING

Malaysia is at the crossroads! Should we continue to move along the racial path of the recently failed attempt at collaboration initiated by the PAS-UMNO meetings for an agenda of Malay-Muslim Unity or embrace the Bangsa Malaysia reality of the multi-racial parties? This is not going to be an easy question to answer. However, one acknowledged fact is that every Malaysian who travels with a Malaysian Passport to a foreign country is seen and accepted as a citizen of Malaysia rather than as a member of his race. We are Bangsa Malaysia!

Definetely we are Malaysians first and then members of our racial community. So, the impending by-election is also a test case of our status as Bangsa Malaysia. If we can all accept ourselves as Bangsa Malaysia, there will be no clamour for the supremacy of one race over the other.

This by-election is a new journey for al Malaysians rather than one only for those in Permatang Pauh constituency. Rightly then, it is being hailed as the Mother of all by-election. And what is at stake is how the votes will determine the orientation of this country for the next four years and even beyond. It is a serious election which we need to pray for: we cannot leave God out of the picture. He is the creator of all human beings – Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Taoist or followers of othe religions – who were obedient to this one God. Although we may express the obedience differently, all of us must submit our last breath to the one God and no other! Yes, as Shakespeare reminds us, even kings are subject to death, the great leveller.

Theologically, we are all journeying to eternity and we begin that journey not tomorrow but today. We had turned our backs on God when we upset the equilibrium of our nation, Malaysia, through the racial hatred and riots on May 13, 1969. Yet, our God, far from abandoning us, stirred in the hearts of ALL – inlcuding the leaders of the various races and religions – the need to once again honour God. Thus, was born the first principle of Rukun Negara.

When Beiief in God, the first principle of our Nation, is ignored, we may be infecting ourselves with racial prejudice and hatred. These are sins to be avoided in any religion or else we destroy truth in ourselves and society and live a life of lies. What a disastrous way to live, one that can only begets injustices. And we know that there are many abuses and injustices in our land because we deceive ourselves with pseudo-privileges.

How can we overcome them? The answer is simple. We must live truth in our lives and distance ourselves from abuses. To achieve this, we need "to act in accordance with the objective demand of moraltiy." (CSDC #198)

It may seem a tall order, but it is not! With God’s help, we can do it. Let us, during the next ten days go down on our knees and pray to God that our nation will live Truth and experience a Fair and Just by-election.

Remember, God hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord said "I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings and I have come to deliver them." (Ex 3:7-8)

Yes, God will visit us in Permatang Pauh and deliver us. Let us pray!

PRAYER FOR PERMATANG PAUH BY-ELECTION

O God, we understand You today as Lord
not only of individuals but also of nations and governments,

We thank You for the graces you have given us
to exercise our political charity in Malaysia.

We also thank you for the opportunity of free choice offered to the people
of the constituency of Permatang Pauh for electing a leader.

Lord God, give them the courage to exercise their solemn duty
as citizens of Malaysia to vote on behalf of the whole nation.

Guide those voters with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit
so that they may choose a suitable and trustworthy candidate
in becoming the next Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

note: this issue of the herald’s front page carries the report of the protest at the bar council. gee, so will mr ‘foreign turn over home’ minister make noise again that it is not ‘religion’ and going to suspend herald? btw, the report was taken from the malaysian insider, not written by herald itself at all. this is an issue that concerns all of us and as one who fear god, we need to be aware of it. does mr home minister fear god? he does not care about the going ons, social and politcal issues while he prays 5 times a day? why must ‘religion’ focus on prayers prayers prayers, church church church only, and shut itself to the outside world, the injustices and disharmony and so on? what kind of religion is that?  syed hamid albar’s brain is too small to understand that – sack him!

UPDATED:  ya listen to his reasoning on what herald suppose to print at another of anil netto’s post- his grey matter is missing! religion shouldn’t care about injustice and concern for the poor and down-trodden?? PIGILAH SYED HAMID ALBAR!!!!
