national anthem in different version
Post on Aug.23, 2007
in the light of the wee meng chee negaraku (national anthem) controversy, what do you think will happen if i post some different version of negaraku? should i? dare i? will the gomen made noise i insulted the national anthem? will i be charged under the national anthem act?
yesterday i received a sms from a friend on a different version of negaraku, using the haze occurrence in our country. well it made fun of the country and also of the king. hmm… so i shouldn’t post it up?
one thing i remember is that as a kid long long long time ago, we kids (the neighbourhood) like to rattle off this one version… just the 1st line actually, with the 2nd line to rhyme with the first line. well, it was in hokkien (it’s rather lame i know but as kids, it was just for fun).
negara ku
tunku cheh ka ku
what does it mean? simply ‘tunku went to jail’. it was added just because of the rhyme ‘tunk-ku’ and ‘ka-ku’ with ‘negara-ku’. (you know how kids are. can remember how we conjure up our own poem for the ‘la la li la tam pong’ too but that is another matter).
i don’t remember our parents reprimanding us not to say this because it will be us who will go to jail instead! haha!
*wondering should i post the ‘jerebu’ negaraku version*

Marsilla, If the government would start with that…. wow that would be a leap forward.
Lucia, Just make your version, afterall Negaraku is stolen from Mamula moon, or Terang Bulan.
So if you maintain you were singing that, with different words, they have no leggs to stand on.
The melody was composed by a frenchman and has nothing Malaysian to call property

[...] Lucia posted something which sort of brought back fond memories. There was no such sensitivities back then and we had so much fun singing our version. Lucia’s hokkien version went [...]

Many nations adopted existing tunes as their national anthem.
The US National Anthem – The Star Spangled Banner was taken from the tune of a British pub drinking song “The Anacreontic Song”. Britain’s God Save the Queen is also the tune (with different lyrics, of course) for the Royal Anthem of Norway and Lichstentein.
I have no problems singing Negaraku with pride , even if it was originally the tune for Mamula Moon or Terang Bulan.
My Dad served the country for many years, and risked his life a number of times.
I love the country, the Anthem has nothing to do with the UMNO racists and crooks

When you play football, can you use hand? If you play basketball, can’t you kick the ball? That the ruling if you want to play the games. In any society, there exist written laws and unwritten laws, we must respect the sensitivities of the society especially the multi racial society.
It is unwise to post some different version of negaraku – national anthem. There are so many ways to express your feeling and your opinions. The direct way is to participate in politics and standing for the general election. When you win, you can express your FEELING in parlimen. That is the diferent being as a parlimen member and common people.

To every rule and law there is an exception. There are no laws so perfect that it can be used as some sort of lazy solve all for the governance of a land. When a government rules in bad faith, all evil emerge and in the fullness of time, everything goes topsy turvy.
Rogues will always fall back on “duty” as an alibi when cornered for their misdeeds afterwards. Even patriotism has been exposed as the last refuge of scoundrels by Samuel Jonhson in the 18th century:

We don’t live a convenient black and white world as regard the values of humanity. Often we have to consider the full context of an event with regard to rules and even laws.

yes i know about our national anthem ’stolen’ from terang bulan and mamula moon… that is the music but i’m not going to change the music! i am going to change the lyrics which is the lyrics composed by our m’sian govt.
kitty
yes i love the national anthem too and when i sing it, i sing it with pride. i am quite shocked to learn yesterday quite a no. of my older church friends (those over 60) don’t know how to sing it!
freelittlebrain
bad analogy. the different version is not to MADE FUN of the national anthem but it is all FOR THE FUN OF IT. there’s a difference.
can express feeling in parliament? well only if i’m a UMNOputera.

i’m at a loss at what you said here. no comments.(but i know i agree)
