problem with comments/spams
Post on Jul.25, 2007
any of you have problems commenting these days? uh oh if you have, you can’t tell me via comments here. well then, do you mind contacting me via the feedback form here? let me know if you have problems and what problems.
you see, i think the problem started when i try to use various spam er… what you call… spam fighter plugin. i used to receive lots of spams that went to my moderation box, and these spams comments were posted in all over the various posts, some to my posts as far back as a year or 2 years!! one day i will receive about 10 or so… once even received about 50 in a day!! all along i have been using akismet. so i was beginning to wonder i still receiving so many spams, is akismet working any good.
i was recommended 2 other spam plugin. first i used the ‘did you pass maths’ plugin where you have to add a simple sum as the security code for comments to go through. then i realise this is not so noticeable so i used the ‘anti spam image‘ spam plugin, where you’ll have to type some words or letters and these are in colours so it’ll be more noticeable.
however the main problem with both of these is that once you forgotten to enter the security code and asked to click on back button on your browser to go back to comments, you will lose all your typed comments! this is no good esp. for people who type some long comments.
so i think now i’m going to disable security code all together and use a better (as a friend recommended) spam plugin – spam karma. hopefully this will solve my problems of no spams coming in and thus i don’t have to let commenter enter some security codes ("mai fun" lah, likedat!).
anyway i’m only starting to use spam karma so i’m afraid that there might be some teething problems here and there. if you don’t see your comments going through, don’t fret ah, it is somewhere around… i’ll release it (unless it is spam!). spam karma is said to be powerful but sometimes too powerful will scare a non IT savvy person like me! like maybe i don’t know how to do the configuration or what… like some legitimate comments might be consider spam too! anywhere i’m keeping my fingers crossed this won’t happen.
oh yeah i hope some of you if you had ‘eat full nothing to do’ (that is extremely NOT going to bother you) can help me out with feedback… try commenting and let me know what happens. arigato!!

this is just a testing comments as just started using spam karma. seems that comments now go through unmoderated (though moderation had been set). want to see if this can go through and want to see if there is some kind of security code e.g. captca.

Huh… interesting… I had pressed the “Submit your jogs” button, then realized that there was a typo (darn sticky keyboard), got to the verify screen, then pressed back-page… Guess what? The earlier comment got thru…

I HATE READING THE NEWSPAPER NOWADAYS. I only and usually read the business section, entertainment section etc. All except front lines and all that have to do with the Malaysian politics as I have given up hope on our country, our democracy and our politics. Nowadays I only read overseas news as they are more accurate and more liberal. Our country, manage by our government and politics seems sure that they are not going to change for the sake of globalization. They are not only not mature but more importantly not educated enough to run the country in these competitive times of globalization where the fastest and smartest of runners are the winners of this competitive world.
When ever friends or family takes up the newspaper and debates on the frontline that this idiot politicians brings about, it makes me puke, frustrated, lost. How is it possible that superimposing photo’s of politicians a crime. If so, I’m afraid that most of my friends are at fault as we are use to discussing this matter openly as we believe our self to be educated and these photos were just for fun. You can call me an idiot but I know I’m not a criminal if I decide to superimpose some politician’s photos. Actually I need not superimpose any photos as there are ample videos on the internet on our politicians acting stupid and being stupid. My friends and my brother that are in overseas are NEVER coming back to Malaysia as they’ve notice what idiots are running the country and they are sure that this will not change.
Fellow friends, family, brothers of Malaysia, I hope that what I’ve written might bring us all Malaysians together for this difficult times. Times where we are no more colonize by foreigners but a rather new kind of foreigners, our Malaysian politics. It is now very clear, that our politicians including Najib are not fit to run the country. The biggest threat to our country is no more the foreigners that we believe but rather politicians or the government that that are not educated enough or at all to understand the world in terms of economics and change. I know I have so much to give to the country and I’m sure my friends and family will be ale to bring our country to new heights but unfortunately, we are constantly suppressed by our own government.
I’m so irritated about the current news that Najib has stated that the government is all out on bogglers. This is only my second time writing out articles like this as I usually don’t do this. I’m fed up of sitting by the corner and doing nothing. I’M NOT AFRAID OF THE GOVERNMENT ANYMORE!!!! Come catch me or all the bogglers that have done no wrong…Yes….bring Malaysia back to the Stone Age where democracy and freedom of speech does not exist. Great, because I’M SURE I’M DOING THE RIGHT THING as 20 years from now I will have the guts to tell my sons and daughters that I did the right thing and that the Stone Age government of Malaysia only realizes it 20 years later.
Do the right thing for our children and our future generations to come!!
Stop these irrational and ridiculous politicians of ours in exchange for globalization, progress, productivity and a future in the future. (Not Stone Age)
The power is in our hands and not these politicians. We have a choice to choose prosperity and progress. Think carefully and wisely. Thank You.

yeah strange. i headache already over this spam thingy. i also dunno how it really works though i had read the guides and FAQ. one moment i want reader to comment easily, one moment i am scared of spams so made it more difficult to comment… headache lah… what should i do? perhaps i should disable this spam karma and try the other simpler spam plugin (which might get more spams coming in but let commenting in easier).
patrick
thanks for your comments. i share your sentiments indeed. our country is really going to the dogs… thanks to our politicians, esp. the umnoputeras.

Okay, if this test comment appears via Firefox, it can be safely assumed that this Blog cannot be viewed properly with Maxthon! Maxthon quoted endless vague script errors.

Patrick, I gave up reading local noosepapers and watching local TV for more than a decade now. Can’t stand even 3 minutes of either. Saved by the Net and to a lesser extent, CNN.
Well, more people are waking up rapidly now and deloping the same allergy. A good sign. Lucia used to call me “negative”.
The fact is, certain “negativities” can and do become justified as awareness increase wrt the real negative situation. How long exactly can one be expected to be sanguine?

Lucia,
Most ’solutions’ to comments spam use an elephant to shoot a mouse.
I had this problem in my forum, and noticed that spammers are like little doggies they gotto ‘pee’ an URL everywhere otherwise it has no sence to spam.
So what i did is changed the script so that if you did not place at least 5 comments over 5 different dates, you cannot post an URL and if you include the comment is blocked.
Since than no more spam!

luckily not many people use maxthon. uh oh but many use IE and i think there are also script errors in IE.
in reponse to patrick: i labelled you ‘negative’? nah, don’t recall. what i recalled is that i just said you seemed to criticise everything… everything MALAYSIAN but very rarely american/british. the ‘but’ there is important.
albert
‘change the script’? what is the meaning of that? how to do it? ok i’ll email your personally to ask.
