code of conduct for bloggers?
Post on Apr.12, 2007
remember i blog about a prominent US blogger, kathy sierra, who received death threat from a commenter in her blog? as a result of this, technology publisher, tim o’ reilley had released a code of conduct for bloggers (draft only).
The draft posted by O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media Inc., also calls on bloggers not to write anything online that they would not say in person. The posting of anonymous comments should also be prohibited on blogs, according to the draft.
it seemed that two bloggers had spoken up that they do not support the code.
what do you think? lately with all the pot-shots fired at bloggers from our dear ministers, do you think sooner or later, our government will come up with a code of conduct for us bloggers too?
remember the latest pot-shot from shaziman which he said bloggers might have to register soon? then he back-tracked and said that the government is not out to censor bloggers as the registration proposed is meant for survey purpose only.
hmm… survey eh. yeah first the registration for survey, then who knows what next? maybe sooner or later, they (gomen!) might come up with a code of conduct or rules and regulations for bloggers. i could just hear them saying "these are only suggested codes, not necessary codes for the bloggers to follow".
ahh… but wait, our PM had then assured us that there will be no registration of bloggers. since he believed that having bloggers to register would not solve bloggers from posting ‘negative and malicious contents’ (in shaziman’s words). smart fellow. he also said:
"Existing laws are sufficient to deal with them. The laws will be invoked when the need arises,"
gee, see there is no freedom in blogging. careful with what you wrote – if the government think what you wrote is seditious, malicious, negative and a threat to the country’s security, the law will be upon you!
well, mr PM, you have the law yes, but thank god now we have the national alliance of bloggers.
note: lots of info on this registration issue (and also the bloggers alliance) can be found in jeff ooi’s blog, of which he had listed out some foreign press mentioning about this issue.

Interesting. Though I do not agree that I am responsible for commenters. How do I control what they say? Though trolls need to be deleted without a second thought.
lucia: you can’t control what commenters say but you can moderate them or delete them. it’s really up to the individual blogger to handle the situation. to some, they don’t mind the malicious or rude comments, to some they mind a lot so they have to delete them off.

In general, most bloggers don’t create stories that have no basis. You can find that we actually blog on articles that are widely published with our observation and opinions.
lucia: exactly! if not for what had been published – mostly the mainstream media itself – we would have nothing to blog about. we only picked their news and come in with our observation and view.
somebody once refer to these kind of posts as ‘echo post’ and remark they are mostly very boring (including mine!). well who cares, i’m not deter by his remark. he said only echo posts like jeff ooi’s are interesting because he usually had lots of juicy details to add on not found in the media. well i told him that was because jeff has his little birds while i have none. i only rely on myself and i’m proud of it.
