help wanted re: KL hotels
Post on Aug.29, 2006
anyone, esp. those in KL, know of any low budget hotels in the puduraya area? at least those that are below RM150 per night.
many years back when i was in KL, i stayed once in puduraya hotel. it was not a very good hotel but it was cheap and just for one night is ok. is the puduraya hotel still existing in the puduraya terminal?
then i once stay in this hotel in puduraya which is just next to the shell station… i forgot its name… something start with N or so and its front signboard is green in colour and i think its owner is a malay. this hotel is much better than puduraya hotel. i might want to try this hotel but i forgot its name so can’t search for it on the net. anyone can help?
there is also one hotel in the puduraya area which is next to nando’s chicken (or is it burger king?) on the other side opposite this N hotel where shell is. what is the name of that hotel? its facade is in some kind of maroon colour and it has a wide grand steps leading up to the hotel.
another question – how far is kepong from puduraya? if i were to take a taxi, how much it will cost? is there a LRT or MRT, whatever that goes to kepong (or thereabout)? but this LRT/MRT must be near puduraya.
ok i hope KL folks would be able to enlighten me. thanks!

I dont think you should consider Hotel Pudu or hotels in that vicinity if you have a choice. It is not very safe there at nights
lucia: yeah so i heard, but never mind, usually i don’t go out at night. i had stayed before in 3 different hotels in puduraya vicinity and i’m still here in one piece.

I think the big hotel you are talking about is called Ancasa Hotel. It used to be Impiana. You can google it in the Net. I agree with Jigsaw Puzzle about security in the vicinity of Pudu Raya but if you are extra vigilant and not stay out too late, that hotel is quite suitable coz it’s near Puduraya LRT and Petaling Street (for food and shopping). But if you intend to go to Kepong, you should be taking the KTM Kommuter from KL Sentral. Again for convenience sake, you may want to consider hotels near KL Sentral instead; maybe YMCA which is nearby KL Sentral?
lucia: ah that’s right bkworm. ancasa hotel.Â
YMCA? is this YMCA located at some road name like jln samba…than… or some indian sounding name? i believe i had stay in YMCA before long ago. it’s convenient to stay in YMCA if i take train direct to KL sentral but now i’m going to take bus to puduraya. i don’t want to take too many transport… i mean if i’m in puduraya, from pudu take to kl sentral then from kl sentral take to hotel and from hotel take to kepong. ‘mai fun.’Â

The Green hotel you mentioned beside the Shell Station opp. Puduraya is Hotel Katari. They also offer hourly rates for those who are inclined to take a quick nap
There’s also a hotel in Kepong itself, Star-something. Costs aronud MYR130 a night.
ah yes katari. that’s right. i remember its name now. (but earlier i thought its name start with N pulak). the hotel is quite ok but only thing is that it is very noisy (i happen to get front room) what with in one of the most noisiest area of course lah.

I suggest you walk further towards Bukit Bintang — a selection available there @RM90-110 range, fronting Jalan Alor hawker stalls. (I know that area was once quite rowdy — Botak Chin was brought down there!)
As for Kepong, OUT of my knowing radar — I’m expert on PJ/Bangsar up to Subang Jaya all the way to Furong…
Welcome to B’g, B’d, wolfish city — Penang gal better get a bodyguard! (semi-serious mode)
lucia: oh bkt bintang and jln alor. yep i stay in nova hotel in jln alor before and also another low budget hotel forgot its name. also in cangkat bkt bintang. hey all the time while i was in kl, staying in so many hotels before… i was all alone lah… no big bad wolves in KL after me, see. me brave, me no need bodyguard.

Lucia, I ditto Bk Worm’s recommendation on the YMCA at KL Sentral. KL Sentral is only one stop by LRT from the Puduraya area (station: Pasar Seni). The Y is cleaner and costs less than Rm100, with breakfast. To get to Kepong, you could take the KTM Komuter.
lucia: yes YMCA sounds good. maybe i’ll give it a try but it also depends on ‘circumstances’ (more about that later).

Yes, consider YMCA. I was staying there when I was in KL long, long time ago (well, not too long-just about a year ago; missing the food makes me feel so long already!). It’s about RM 80 with breakfast served to you (be punctual though, the lady is very angry if you are late; I wasn’t expecting breakfast to be served as I was already 30 mins past the time but she still served me
). Ask for front rooms though, as the back ones could be noisy with mamak stalls clanging their woks. You could also go for a massage in that area. If you want to go to Kepong, you have to take Star LRT, which its stop is unavailable at KL Sentral but you could still take Monorail and change at Hang Tuah.
Wah, Uncle Desi so notorious in Bukit Bintang har? As what?
Bukit Bintang and Puduraya are almost the same. Notorious and popular for you-know-what.
lucia: oh! so many people recommend the Y eh. maybe i should give it a go after all… but maybe another trip, not this time. why? will tell later.
btw, THANK YOU so much to everyone who responded here. thank you, thank you, you had been so helpful. i knew i can count on my bloggers friends.

Erm, to whoever who said that KL Sentral was just a LRT stop away – sure, if you walk away from Jln Pudu and walk across Petaling St to Pasar Seni LRT – but imagine if you just finished a 4 hour bus journey (or more, if you’re coming from the island), carrying your luggage across the crowds and throngs of tourists to get to Pasar Seni. Like that, can also say Pudu area one KTM Komuter stop away from KL Sentral (Kuala Lumpur station). Also, one stop away via Monorail (Hang Tuah station). Can also say walking distance leh.
Then poor Lucia, after dragging her luggage halfway across Chinatown finds herself onto a RM1 KTM Komuter or Kelana Jaya Line LRT (or RM1.20 Monorail) in KL Sentral. There, poor, poor Lucia drags her bags from whichever part of Brickfields she’s in to the YMCA – down the street of Jln Tun Sambathan.
Then to get to Kepong, poor Lucia would take a Monorail to Hang Tuah (why? walking distance mah) where she would alight (oh, my, Singapore-speak) and transfer (heh) to the STAR LRT line to find herself in Kepong. Of course, she could have taken a KTM Komuter to either Kepong Station or Kepong Sentral Station (the latter is named after a crummy housing estate, not a suggestion to its sentrality)
But then again, Kepong is walking distance.
But by now, we have covered only part of the complete idiocity of the KL rail transit system. Just say Lucia takes the STAR LRT behind Puduraya and change at Masjid Jamek with PUTRA LRT to KL Sentral – that would cost her RM2 (RM1+RM1), not to mention the hassle. But if she arrived in Singapore by bus to Queen St Terminal, she would take a bus from Bugis MRT to Dhoby Ghaut Interchange for 65 cents, despite changing trains (65 cents is the lowest fare on the MRT). Also, unless Lucia decides to put money in her MyKad or buy a Touch-n-Go (quite useless for a Penangite, I would imagine), she would have to buy two tickets, while here in crummy Singapore, she would only need to buy 1.
A bit stupid considering that all three MRT lines in Singapore were developed at different times, decades even in the case of the Northeast and Circle Line – while all rail lines in the Klang Valley were developed in the same decade, all by the federal government.
Makes you wonder, how badly they are going to screw Penang’s new rail transit system…
lucia: wow rajan! you seems to got everything figure out!
