electricity tariff up… life-style must change?
Post on May.26, 2006
since so many bloggers had blog on this, i’d better blog on it too. ok call me copy-cat, devoid of ideas or merely love to rant. haha.
oh yeah, electricity tariff increase! by 12%! but hey, good news for me! why? our house electricity bill is usually less than RM40 – so no increase for us. wahh! so kind of the energy, water and communication minister, lim keng yaik to think of us lower income group people?
ahh… but the increase will affect those who are in business, like restaurants, hotels, food courts, hospitals and so on. some of these businesses are patronised by those whose ‘electricity bill is lower than RM43.60′ (or in other words, those who are not affected by the increase). what if these business people said ah, electircity increase so i must increase my price/fee… then those who patronised their businesses will be affected! and here we have our EWC minister telling us we won’t be affected.
so what to do? change our lifestyle? like what our DPM asked us to do so when petrol price hike was announced? goodness me! i already lower income, how to change lifestyle? upper income people can change lifestyle to become middle income people but lower income people?? tsk, tsk, should i apply to be on welfare?
btw, when you read the report from the star paper, did you noticed this:
Even with the 12% tariff increase, he said, Malaysia still had the cheapest electricity in the region with the exception of Indonesia.
now, ain’t that familiar or what. it made me so mad to read this. why is it they always like to compare? if i remember correctly, during the petrol hike, a person in authority commented too that our petrol prices are cheaper than ___ (forgot). ah yes, i remember the postage increase too, a postal officer had said something like “our postage rate is one of the cheapest in asia (or somewhere… sorry so long time forgot all places mentioned). this kind of comparision to justify their increase is very irritating, isn’t it?
oh dear me, i’m right now on the computer while the TV is on without nobody watching. “waste electricity lah, girl!”. so excuse me, while i go switch off the TV. in the meantime. you too might want some tips on how to jimatkan elektrik, so surf over to NST for some tips. oh, and if you are here, means you are using a computer, so you might want to know too.

The low threshold of 43.60 in modern times makes it merely some sort of tokenism.
lucia: huh? don’t quite understand. you mean this no increase for those under 43.60 is a token for using less electricity?Â

Electricity and fuel prices are going up over here too. American has no one to blame but ourselves. We let the envronmentalists control our energy policy. We have not built a new oil refinery in America since the 1980s. We have plenty of oil reserves, but no one wants an oil rig in their backyard. Americans deserve to suffer because they have the wrong priorities and we will.
lucia: oohhh… sounds so depressing.Â

What to do.. everything is monopolised in Malaysia.. If only the government will give out a few more licenses like what they did to the mobile phones companies( Okay that was extreme as at one point there’s like soooooooooooo many companies) but competition is good for consumers!!!
lucia: thanks for visiting, mr bherng. i agree everything is monopolised. i understand though that tenaga have to buy power from some companies, known as ‘independant power producers’ (IPP). i don’t quite understand the IPP. are those IPP just like tenaga supplying power but they only sell to tenaga, then tenaga sell to the consumers? why can’t those IPP sell direct to consumers? then we have several companies supplying electricity – no monopolising.

Patrick Teoh in his Tok Kok blog dishes it out nicely at Crapperdom:

The Energy minister is pictured as smiling over TNB’s brilliant generosity. The thinking ppl modtly don’t share the mirth But what the heck! His expression could also pass for “crying” too, with a bit of a PC imagination – should the occasion demands it.
Always it’s the indirect increase in the cost of living that will cause the worse fallout while the big deal tokenism of 43.60 means little more than a publicity stunt.
lucia: yep i read patrick’s take from beritamalaysia. i don’t visit his blog regularly.
the sad thing is the indirect increase in the cost of living, we cannot control it. we can only control our ‘jimatkan elekrtik’ part! Â

Business that surely earn money is no business of yours!!!
Thats their motto…
Lucia, surely keng Yaik wouldn’t want to incur the wrath of the layman since they already lost some part of their Sarawak seats to the opposition…
I think they can’t imagine the consequences of incuring the wrath of the people
People POWER!!!
lucia: yalah. this thing about not affecting those whose bill is below RM43.60 methink keng yaik saja bersandiwara to try to please the people. Â

Hi Lucia,
The fuel hike and the power hike are certainly causing changes in my lifestyle. This weekend will see me desperately seeking out those recommended energy saving items :: cheap plasma/lcd TV, energy saving lamps and refrigerators and motion sensor lights. What other devices would they be recommending next.
Another energy, power saver; less blogging, fewer trips to blogs and alternative web sites etc.
Happy energy/power saving, folks.
lucia: hey lone, long time no see you comment.
ya, so it seems we all have to change our lifestyle eh.
less blogging, fewer trips to blogs/websites means you want to be quick (shorter time) when on the computer, right? well try do speed blogging/visiting then.
