Dialogue or intellectual discourse is only possible and real if the Pope, e.g., can freely make an invitation to the opposite side to convert just as that side has always made such a call to others. Until any talks have hope to succeed, they will have to be conducted on a round table basis as equals.

WHAT an amazing couple of weeks. For the first time in my life I find myself offering unconditional and heartfelt support to the pronouncements by George Pell and the Pope. Well, it wasn’t so much for what they said but for the fact they said it in the face of fulmination and fatwa from a rival religious group………

I place the blame on the western press. To be honest I was too not happy when I read the first news reports and so were a lot of my friends. However most of us didn’t have any access to the actual text (or the translation) of the address he made in Germany.

The question remains why he choose to quote 14th century Byzantine emperor as saying Islam and the Prophet Mohammad was evil and violent. He also used the terms “jihad” and “holy war”. It was western orientalists which translated the arabic word jihad as Holy war when it means much more than that.

It is also clear from his speech that he believes in the Orientalist view that Prophet Mohammad opposed forced conversions when he was politically weak but changed his views when he took power in Mecca. This is opposed by my Muslim theologists today.

It may show that he lacks an understanding of the religion.

lucia: yes the press is to be blamed. they played up his speech by mentioning only that quote from the emperor.Â

if by the pope’s speech, it shows he lack undertanding of islam, then by all means showed him so… rationally, peacefully, not through violent means or like PAS did, staging a demo!! yesterday’s star paper had this write-up by tariq ramadan, the president of the european muslim network think-tank in brussels. where he rightly said that the people should understand the real reason why the pope was wrong. most people just concentrate on the quote from the emperor and worst, think that the pope agree with the quote, hence all the hoo-haa. it is an interesting article. pity i can’t find it online.
