interview ‘lighthouse’ manager on ‘street walk’
Post on Sep.12, 2009
what is the lighthouse? a drop-in centre for the homeless people run by the penang catholic church.
what is the street walk? a project of the lighthouse. once a month on first saturday. cooking food and bringing them out to the homeless street people on the streets.
on 5 sept., citizen journalists lim boo seng and myself joined in the street walk. before we hit the street, i interviewed belevendiran joseph (or fondly known as bele in short), the lighthouse manager about the street walk. lim took the video. we went out on the street, together with several other volunteers at 11.00pm. i brought along my flip video and took many shots of volunteers giving out food, drinks and clothes.
we went to market street, jln. mesjid kapitan keling, weld quay, hotel central, prangin mall, komtar.
wanted to combine my video shots with that of lim to made one full video (editing by lim) but unfortunately after i passed my flip video to lim, he said he found viruses in the video files. what a pity. i thought i would have the chance to see some of my video shots. now, as it is, only shots from lim were used.
as we filmed this as part of our citizen journalism work, the video is up on malaysiakini tv. as from now (about 10 hours after it was up) i spy over 800 views. well i hope more people will view it so that they’ll be aware that there are many street people around and that there are good people like the lighthouse volunteers around to help them.
this was my third time that i went on the street walk. first time it was with a small group just for first experience. second time, it was with our church’s ‘penang human development committee’ group and i had blog about it here. that was in may last year when i have not joined malaysiakini’s citizen journalism workshop yet. however in march this year (after i joined the workshop in jan.) a few of us citizen journalists did went out on the street during the night… but not to give out food. we went out to interview the homeless people. i did one interview in bahasa (and yes, i’m aware of the criticism i get on how bad i was. sob.). read about it here.
since not all of you are subsribers of malaysiakini, you can’t view the video on malaysiakini tv (but if you are, please do view it from there, as i want to see the number of hits!), i’m putting up the video here, taken from lim’s youtube site.

I congratulate you both for the effort put in to enlighten readers about the good deeds of the LightHouse.
This is a highly informative video. It tells you the good things done by the Lighthouse and how dedicated these people really are.
However, from the video-making standpoint, it is poorly done. It is boring.
If this was an interview, you had me fooled. I never did hear the voice of the interviewer so it came across as an eight-minute monologue. I guess the interviewer’s voice has been edited, but why? The outdoor scenes were a good relief. Perhaps some of the things said by the manager could have been delivered by, say, the interviewer or another person and leading back to the manager with a question or point.

birdseye
first of all, actually this video was not finalised yet but i don’t know how m’kini got hold of it to upload to their site. my friend, lim, put it up on his youtube to let me view, comment, and then he’ll edit again… but before we could do anything, both of us were surprised, it was up at m’kini tv.
secondly, we did not play the interview. it was last moment on the spot while we were waiting 2 hours to go out on the street, we thought might as well do something. yes, i asked lim to cut off my voice! for one thing, as i said, it was not planned, i thought the interviewing wouldn’t be good. might hear me stammering and all that. anyway i’m sure people more interested in what the lighthouse manager said, than in what i have to say. what i asked/interviewed the manager was just that for him to say something as he was not prepared too!
anyway thanks for your comments and constructive criticism. we’ll take that in mind the next time we decided to do another video.
