raya lunch - nasi briyani

POSTED: Thursday, 2/10/08, 12:38 AM   FILED: general, personal |

yesterday, first day of hari raya, went to somebody’s house for nasi briyani and kueh-kueh!

actually i don’t know the person. er… then how on earth can i go to his house? well, it’s like this. this man is the boss of the small food stalls complex which is just right beside our flat. he knows my neighbour (non malay) very well since my neighbour is sort of like the representative of our residents association here. he asked my neighbour to invite several of her own friends (non malays) who stays at the same place (flat) with her for the raya lunch, so my neighbour invited my mother, sister and me. (she also invited about 10 other persons).

we seemed to be the first ‘set’ of people to arrive. we were served nasi briyani with a piece of chicken (1st pic). then it was self service with the vege kuah and the cucumber/pineapple dish. (2nd pic). since it was self service with the kuah, put in lots of kuah because that’s how i usually like to eat my rice with curry as kuah.. what they call ‘banjir’! (flood) the nasi briyani was delicious!

after the lunch, for dessert we took some of the kueh-kueh we saw on the table! (3rd pic). er… they were cookies actually, many different types. we were the first one to enjoy them as we were sitting in front of the tray. should have taken the photo before we ‘wallop up’ some of the cookies as they look so lovely with the colours and arrangement. this photo here i took after many people have ‘wallopped’ the cookies!

well i’m glad that at least this year, i attended a ‘home’ i.e. a family raya gathering instead of open house of VIP. as for tomorrow, can’t attend any raya gathering as will be attending the college general (major seminary for priests) bicentennial mass. 200 years! it’s going to be a big event which i’m not going to miss. oh, then the saturday (or was it sunday?) open house by our PM, can’t attend either as i have something on during this weekend… which i’m going to blog about on saturday wee morning (my usual blogigng time).

Why so ungracious? No mention of host’s name to thank them. Eat, beat your backside and off you go?

do i have to know the host’s name to thank them? you think just mention the host name is already thanking them? and do i have to tell everything in my post here?
firstly, as i had said i do not know the host at all. he is a friend of my neighbour.
you were not there, how will you know i was ungracious, and as you rudely said beat my backside?
ok since you want to know… looks like i have to tell more…

we didn’t go there with empty hands. we brought a hamper for the family. when i reached there, i shook hands with all the family including the children and wish them selamat hari raya.
after i ate, we hang around talking. at that time, more people started to arrive. we sat outside. when we want to leave, i went into the house to look for the host. shook hands with him and thanked him and his wife. i even add “sedap” after the “terima kasih”.

so please do not say i’m ungracious ok.

      haha

this small episode illustrates the complexities of our multicutural individual characters !

most problems start from a kind of miscommunication either intentional or accidental or through gross ignorance.

Of course some ppl have devious motives and it will be good to be aware of who they are , however if anonymous I wouldn’t even respond

well i could easily ask my neighbour for the host’s name anytime - then he won’t be anonymous. (even if i know his name, he’s still someone i didn’t know!). although i don’t know him i don’t mind going as it was him who insisted my neighbour brought along her non malay friends staying in her neighbourhood. it was not i (and my family) the only ones who didn’t know the host but the other 10 or so friends which my friend brought along also didn’t know the host.

for this, yes, we should all be thankful to the host who was so kind enough to invite even those whom he didn’t know. this is what we call sharing raya joy with the non muslim. kudos to him!
