the indigenous people of malaysia

POSTED: Wednesday, 30/04/08, 1:39 AM   FILED: government, malaysia, politics |

UPDATED:  read a good explanation of ‘ketuanan melayu’ from our opposition leader, wan azizah, to counter against shahrir samad’s defence of ‘ketuanan melayu’ at sun2surf.

ORIGINAL POST

who are the indigenous people of malaysia?

any school kids would tell you it is the ORANG ASLI.

do a google search for ‘indigenous people in malaysia’ and you’ll get results of orang asli.

we all know it had been like this all along - the truly indigenous (or shall i say the real ’son of the soil’ - i.e. bumiputera in malay) people are the orang asli.

POSTED: Wednesday, 30/04/08, 12:38 AM   FILED: announcement, general |

i am obliged to post the following i received via the e-groups, being part of the organising team. was glad to be among the few members (less than 10!) who were instrumental in picking the tagline and contribute a teeny weeny percentage to the idea of the logo design.

to all my friends out there, bloggers, commenters, readers, i would appreciate it if you could help to spread this message. post the following with the logo and hope you will have the logo displayed in your blog permanently at the sidebar, just like you had the logo of ‘bersih’, ‘bangsa malaysia’, ‘all blogs’ and so on. to some of you, i would be sending you an email regarding this, together with the logo (animated and non animated).  thanks!

association for wives… none for husbands kah?

POSTED: Tuesday, 29/04/08, 2:07 AM   FILED: government, malaysia, politics |

gee i may sound stupid or naive but i didn’t know there is such an organisation as balkis - association of wives of state assemblymen and members of parliament in selangor. then there is also bakti - federal organisation of wives of ministers. i only got to know of them a few days ago when i read about it in jeff ooi’s blog.

then  there is one in kedah too known as bidara - wives of the kedah assemblymen and parliamentarians welfare body. in perak too - er… what is it known as? i remember reading about it somewhere but forgot the name; and of course one in penang, known as pertubuhan bunga tanjung.

the late MGG pillai - 2nd anniversary

    mgg pillai chiaroscuro special report

i had forgotten about mgg pillai’s death anniversary until i read about it in malaysiakini yesterday - a nice piece written by his son, sreejit pillai.

i had known mgg pillai for a very long time… ever since he started ’sang kancil’, the newsgroup duscussion forum. when he passed away, i had blog about it and at his first anniversary, i had also mentioned about it (but no post, just directing to my first post about him). well, since there was a good article by his son on his 21st anniversary, i’d better made a post here to mention his 2nd anniversary.

saw lim guan eng at ‘ho chiak’

POSTED: Monday, 28/04/08, 1:45 AM   FILED: general, personal |

i went to the mount miriam hospital’s ‘ho chiak’ charity food and fun fair yesterday morning and ran into our CM, lim guan eng, when he came to patronise some of the food stalls. he was there to officiate the event.

when he stopped at the ’siew mai’ stall to buy something, i quickly took the opportunity to take the above photo. many people were seen clicking away taking photo of him too. lots of people went up to shake his hands when he was walking in between the stalls. he stopped at a few stalls to buy the food. at one stall he stop by to buy a drink and there and then drank it and nodded his head that it was good. at one stage, i see some people suddenly asked him to pose for a photo with him and he obliged!

    political corruption trial

POSTED: Sunday, 27/04/08, 1:39 AM   FILED: CnP, humour |

good SSS joke (found somewhere on the net)  that may be relevant to the current happenings in our country re: corruption and judiciary.
    (SSS - short, sweet, simple)
    ————————————–

At the height of a political corruption trial, the prosecuting attorney attacked a witness. "Isn’t it true," he bellowed, "that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?"

The witness stared out the window, as though he hadn’t heard the question.

"Isn’t it true that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated.

The witness still did not respond.

Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Sir, please answer the question."

"Oh," the startled witness said, "I thought he was talking to you."

hearing on the use of ‘allah’

POSTED: Friday, 25/04/08, 1:15 PM   FILED: christian, government, politics, religion |

NOTE:  maybe by the time this post was out (lunch hours) the hearing will be over.

Hearing on use of ‘Allah’ tomorrow
    Maria J.Dass

PETALING JAYA (April 24, 2008): The application for Judicial Review over the use of the word Allah by Catholic weekly the Herald is fixed for hearing in the Kuala Lumpur High Court tomorrow.

The application was filed on March 19 to challenge the decision of the Internal Security Minister (now merged into the Home Ministry) to prohibit publishers of the Herald from using the word "Allah" in its publication.

A publication permit dated Feb 12, 2008 (for the period Jan 1, 2008, to Dec 31, 2008) to the Titular Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur; the publisher of the Herald Catholic Weekly stated that "the Publication Permit is subject to Garis Panduan Penerbitan (Publication Guidelines) which prohibits the use of the word Allah in the Herald."

In a statement to the media sent out on Tuesday, Christian Federation of Malaysia executive secretary Rev. Dr Hermen Shastri said Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Rev Datuk Murphy Pakiam will be in the High Court for the hearing.

A team of five lawyers are representing Murphy who in his capacity as Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur is named as the applicant in this action. The lawyers are Porres Royan, Leonard Teoh, Annou Xavier, S.Selvarajah and Derek Fernandez.

The Herald and the Evangelical Church of Borneo (Sidang Injil Borneo or SIB) had also filed another suit challenging a government decision to prohibit importation of Christian educational materials for children containing the word "Allah".

In its lawsuit, SIB argues that Christian use of "Allah" predates Islam, as the word is used for God in the old as well as modern Arabic Bibles and thus not exclusive to the religion of Islam. This suit is pending.

one moment modesty was outraged, the next no?

POSTED: Friday, 25/04/08, 2:01 AM   FILED: general |

as a woman, if a man outraged my modesty, no matter what mood i am in - moody, sensitive, lousy, disturbed - the fact that my modesty had been outraged is there. oh, and also the fact that the man is a friend doesn’t change anything.

why then did this lounge promoter first made a police report that her modesty had been outraged then later on decided to withdraw the report? what had happened? well, of course one can speculate here and there - the most obvious is, had she been paid to withdraw the report?

according to karpal singh, once a report had been made, it can’t be withdrawn, and the police have the obligation to investigate the report. if not, the woman must be charged with false reporting. so what do you think is going to happen? will the police investigate?

remember, the man involved is a MP and a umnopuotera. oh, and please remember too that the police practice double standard. the man involved is an umno MP - the police might not take any action at all. OTOH, if the man involved is a DAP MP, PAS MP or any non umno MP, they will surely take action. or if you put it the other way round - the one who made the report is a umnoputera, swift action will be taken.

remember how one OTK umnoputera lodged a police report against the CM of penang regarding the NEP issue? even though the report was so siily (that’s why he is OTK), the police went into action! the second option of the woman being charged with making false report, who knows some umnoputera might pull some strings and got her off…or paid her fine. let’s wait and see what will happen.

UPDATED:  the latest i see from the star that the police will continue their investigation. ok so i was wrong on that part about the police won’t investigate. good they are going to investigate…. but…. yes there is a but…. it’s just an investigation… prosecution??

note: i wonder why malaysiakini did not carry this news. the news about altantuya’s dad requesting for international court to hear his daughter’s murder, malaysiakini did not carry it too. maybe the former is not so important but the latter should be an exclusive news… and some news of it that won’t be publish in the MSM, which malaysiakini should be able to ‘dig’ out the news to be publish.
