yeah so i saw it on ntv7 8.00pm news. zakaria wiping tears away and saying “saya minta maaf” (i apologise).
what? you think he apologise for not submitting building plans for his mansion? no way!! first he apologised to the media for not answering their questions and also for the delay in making his clarification on the mansion issue to the press. then later on, he wiped tears away when he mentioned his family. ok, so the tears and apology are not connected.
yes he refused to answer any questions from the press but merely read a 12 page statement to the press. he explained why he need such a huge mansion:
Zakaria said he has 11 children, seven sons- and daughters-in-law and 11 grandchildren living with him and noted that the family could continue to grow.
He said it was therefore only “reasonable” for him to build a suitable house to accommodate the large family.
yeah yeah yeah ok so he planned ahead very far. the mansion is for the grandchildren of his grandchildren too. all in the family. then why did he also stated that his (and his wife) intention was to build and leave the mansion behind as a legacy for their children, grandchildren and the local community.
local community? hello, excuse me? in what way is his family’s mansion going to be a legacy for the local community? oh don’t tell me, so this was why he choose to build it among the low-cost housing area – it will stick out like a sore thumb, thus leaving a legacy to the low-cost housing community?
whatever it is, we do not want to know why he build the mansion. the fact is he broke the law… so we want to know why he broke the law when he is the law himself (being a councillor).
yeah he broke the law… and yet believe it or not, his klang UMNO members backs him!!
“The entire thing is the work of the Opposition to discredit him. The only thing wrong here is the non-submission of building plans, that’s all,†division information chief Shoimi Shafie told pressmen at 6.45pm yesterday after the division held an emergency meeting.
that’s all?? but that’s the main point! the non submission of plans – the breaking of law! it was precisely that, that everybody’s not happy. it was because of that, that people demand he resign (on all counts) or his mansion torn down or his datukship being stripped. ah and there are more too – he didn’t pay his assessment and taxes.
goodness! i can’t believe the klang UMNOputera can give him support even he did something wrong. oh sorry, it is indeed very believable because they are one and the same kind – UMNOputera and oh yeah maybe some of them UMNOputera councillors too had some illegal buildings up. well, we already knew one other councillor, mazylnoor was found to have an illegal building up.
and what’s this blaming the opposition? oh, nothing new! UMNO always blame the opposition! it’s either they blame their own ‘BN kaki’ (ie. MCA, MIC, gerakan) or opposition. it’s never themselves at fault… even when it is so obvious for all to see.
DPM najib said that the UMNO supreme council may discuss the zakaria issue. do you think they will sack him as an UMNO MP? don’t hold your breath for it. i bet you, they might come out with statements like “he already regretted his action and had suffered enough. let’s not make him suffer more by asking him to step down as the klang UMNO chief/a councillor.”

note: do read an interesting post by bakri musa on this issue. he said that actually it should be khir toyo whom the sultan should haul up, not zakaria. then he used the phrase ‘ugly malays’… which i’m sure if a non malay were to use it, s/he will receive shots right left centre! bakri musa’s views are what we non malays like to voice out but can’t… for fear of some UMNOputera brandishing the keris at us.
