die! more vehicles on the road soon!
Post on Apr.07, 2006
prices of cars are going cheap! thus you will see more people buying cars. so predicted the road and transport department (RTD). hmm… and the gomen wants to solve congestion problem on the road? hey, don’t you know more cars add to the congestion? the RTD director was heard to say:
however, the increase was not a burden to the RTD as it brought additional revenue to the government.
ahhh… revenue to the gomen. so i see now why the price decrease of cars. so i see now why the petrol hike. eh!! petrol price increase, car price drop. people are entice to buy cars… thus more use of petrol. ahhh… i see. oops! not forgetting, in penang, we are going to have more roads – 2nd link, PORR, monorail – the people’s mndset will be oh more roads already, easy to travel, so of course buy buy buy (since going cheap anyway). so more people using vehicles so back to square one – congestion.

Penang being an island will always have a problem with the growing number of vehicles(not just cars) on the road and parkings; the question is simply how great? The gomen isn’t doing a favour to Penang by cutting the throat of all car owners/buyers for 20 years.
lucia: yes lah, when we talk about congestion, we meant congestion of vehicles, we don’t mean only cars. the ‘growing number of vehicles’ will be a problem to big cities too, even if not an island.
i don’t quite get your last sentence.

Traffic jam is caused by poor planning. Singapore planned 20 years ahead. Malaysia planned what we need 5 years ago.
lucia: methink regarding this new bus sytem in penang, the planning is less than a year ago!

Lucia, the gomen didn’t raise the price of cars for the last twenty years to allow Penang to be less congested ; it did so to feather the nest of business men cronies and that’s done simply by cutting into the pockets of ordinary consumers. After twenty years and still at it!
Indeed, road congestion is showing up everywhere but Penang is especially affected as an island.
Jacky and yourgod, note that at the same time there’s agreat reluctance to raise the interest rates for depositors. This hope was first openly expressed last November(un fact much earlier speculated) and there’s been no such materialization. See the skew in favor of the big boys?

In truth there is little urban space left in Penang -especially the island part, to build any more roads. So planning deficiencies are the major problems which caused road congestion. The ethnic angle of this cause of congestion is undeniable-but Gerakan leaders -mostly Chinese, agreed and supported the neglect of Penang’s transport needs -not so much to cause congestion -but to shore up the national car project ! Such shortsightedness cost Penangites a whole generation of traffic woes -and judging by the `3 gifts’ given under the 9th Malaysian Plan we will have to withstand another 2 more generations of traffic woes plus tolls that last 35 years! That would be true unless something happen to the political choice of the people in coming general election!
lucia: whoa! penang to endure another 2 more generations of traffic woes? scary! how sure are we anyway that traffic woes might change if another party comes in?
