the gift of life
ok taking a break from post-election talk (cabinet and pak lah) today. wanted to talk about something dear to me (no, not my chaly) -the gift of life i.e. organ donation.
i was prompted to talk about this after reading dr liew’s funny (but detailed) post on ‘options after death’. in that interesting post of his, he had provide us with many options to choose what to do with our body when we died. well i had made a comment there, as i always do. enjoy his blog. his insane blog keep me from going insane after reading too many blogs on politics and all that too intellectual stuff stuff. ??? i’m not making sense here eh. well maybe it is too much addiction to the doc’s blog that make me spew nonsense. haha.
ok back to topic. my options after death is simple… to have all my organs donated to the hospital, then cremate my body and throw the ashes over the sea or up high on a mountain.
i sure don’t want to go six feet underground when i’m dead as i don’t want my body to be eaten by maggots! eek! also, if my organs are perfectly healthy, why let them go to waste. why not help out some people to live when i’m dead. hmmm… die so that you can help someone to live? nah, the better clichr would be ‘in death, i still help people’. ahem. see what a good girl i am.
i had pledged to donate my organs since many many years back when i signed up as organ donor from the national kidney foundation (NKF). i ticked on the card to donate all organs except my lungs. why so? actually i don’t mind donating my lungs… provided it does not goes to a smoker! yeah, if you read my earlier post on smoking, you’ll understand i’m very anti-smoking. if a smoker wants to smoke himself/herself to the point of death where his lungs can’t be used, and give my lungs to him/her? no way!! he/she deserve to die so don’t take my lungs. if there is an option of “i’ll give my lungs only to non smoker” then i don’t mind ticking to give my lungs.
before i signed up as organ donor under NKF, i had singed up as a eye donor under the tun hussein eye hospital in KL. but after signing up under NFK, eye was also one of the organ mentioned, so i threw away the eye donor card, though i still have the eye donor certificate. the NFK tagline is ‘the gift of life’. during its organ donation campaign, it used this tagline effectively. ‘give the gift of life – you may help save someone after death’. (or something like that). i carry along my organ donor card proudly as i’m proud that i’m able to give the gift of life when i’m dead and gone.
those of you who are considering organ donation, you can read some FAQ regarding it here and here. i know to some people, they are scared of organ donation as they don’t want their body to have parts missing after they are dead. esp. if they believe in re-incarnation. to some, it is religoius reasons that deter them from donating organs but actually many religions do encourage organ donations, as i said donating your organs means you are helping someone to live a better life or to simply live instead of die, thus surely encourage by religions.
it’s a good, noble deed, friends, so do give the gift of life – sign up today as an organ donor! after all, think how nice to be able to do a good deed even in death. 🙂
