difference between nominating and voting
seeing that not many people undestand about nominating and voting, allow me to give a lesson on the difference between ‘nominate’ and ‘vote’. if you think i’m being busybody or trying to be a smart aleck (as oppose to me trying to help), well it’s your problem.
ok, as i blog yesterday on PPS 2nd anniversary, there is this PPS annual blog award going on. now when there is an award going on, first we need nominations; after the nominations, comes the voting, in which the voting will decide on the winner. (the most number of votes received will be the winner – this is also the process for our country’s general election too, see).
now, ‘nominate’ means to propose by name as a candidate, and ‘vote’ means a means by which such a preferance is made.
so when there is an award going on, like the PPS anual blog award, of which aiz clearly mentioned ‘nominations are open’. so this means we are asked to propose a name as a candidate to vie for the award. now, not many people know that a name need to be nominated only ONCE. once a name is nominated, the name will be in the running for the award, so no matter how many times the same name had been nominated, it made no difference at all.
i remember during the asia weblog award 2004, so many people came in to nominate pok ku, so much so that someone got pissed off that the comments box was flooded with “i nominate pok ku!”, “ya! it’s pok ku for me”, “my nomination is for pok ku” and proceeded to explain that pok ku need to be nominated only once. it’s really no point to nominate the same person more than once. why? because the purpose of nomination is to get the name (candidate) in running for the award, not to let the candidate win!

now to let the candidate win, is where voting comes in. after nominations had been closed, which means no more names (candidates) will be accepted for running for the award, then voting will start. and oh yes, it is at the voting process that if you want the candidate to win, you come in to cast your vote and many people can vote for the same one candidate.
apparently not many people understand what is nomination and i see in PPS annual blog award, a same name blog had been nominated many times by different people. and it doesn’t mean that when a particular blog receive many nominations, that particular blog will win. no, the winner is determined by the number of votes, not the number of nominations. though of course it can’t be deny that if we see a blog being nominated by so many people will also mean that blog will be voted by that same so many people, but as i had said, if you see your favourite blog had already been nominated, then heave a sigh of relief and DO NOT nominate him/her again but remember to vote for her/him when nominations close and voting starts.
having said this, it seems that i do not practice what i preached. i had nominated viewtru for PPS blog of the year, when someone else had already nominated him. same thing goes for best ping of the year too. ok i will go now to delete off my nominations. of course i will not delete off lone’s and mudpond’s names since i was the first one (or only one) to start nominating them.
ok, now that, that (nominating and voting difference) had been settled and understood (hopefully), let’s move on to the next lesson – what is the meaning of ‘neophyte’?
the dictionary define it as: ‘a beginner or novice’.
and in the rules of PPS neophyte blog of the year one of the criteria stated thus:
neophyte blog here need to be 6 months old or newer (less than 6 months). therefore ‘veteran’ bloggers like jeff ooi, drliew and me who had been blogging for more than 6 months certainly don’t qualify under this catergory. however, people need to understand that a blog nominated under PPS neophyte blog of the year CAN be nominated under PPS blog of the year too, while a blog nominated under PPS blog of the year (IF more than 6 months old) CANNOT be under PPS neophyte blog of the year. you follow me? might sound confusing eh!
ok ok to further confuse you guys, let me the chatterbox continue (ok you can yawn) on what’s the difference between a neophyte blogger and a veteran blogger (in this instance, more than 6 months means veteran)? absolutely no difference at all except for how long the bloggers had been blogging. as i stated in comments section of the mudpond, it doesn’t necessarily mean a veteran is more profilic (or better) than a neophyte, or a veteran will get more hits than a neophyte. ok ok i know this is kind of obvioius so sorry for bringing it up (me big mouth lah) but i do realise that not many people really know the meaning of neophyte! in the beginning when i came across it, i don’t either. i thought it had something to do with er… sex… one who is addicted to sex… is the word sound something like neophyte, right?
oops. i’m talking sex again so better scram now. it’s after 2.00am now anyway. so good night all and happy nominating… for now… after 1 june, it will be happy voting!

thanks to kennysia’s comments here, i realised i had made a mistake regarding the rules of PPS. though what i said here (the rules) of nomination and voting still stand for ordinary award/election but it is not the case with PPS. PPS need lots of nominations for the one same blog to be pick for the running of voting of winners. my apology for being ‘misguided’ as sashi puts it. 🙂
