my new ‘toy’

… the olympus SP-590-UZ digicam!
it’s a good digicam for me to move on to becoming a serious amateur, seeing that now i’m going to take lots of photos for my reporting to the herald and UCAN… and next year, maybe for malaysiakini. the one thing i like about it is the zoom function. you know lah, many a times, i’m quite shy to go up right in front to take photos so the zoom function will help a lot if i’m far away.
how much did i paid for it? only RM1000.00. oh, second-hand lah actually, so that price. i bought it from my church’s assistant parish priest. he said he bought it somewhere in june this year so had been using it for a few months only. i think this model digicam came into the market in march this year, so consider quite new if consider in this year. few weeks ago, i saw in the advert, this model digicam went for about RM1400.00.
i had been considering buying a new digicam for a long time actually. the old digicam of mine (casio exilim) was bought in 2003! 5 years is more than enough ‘life-span’ of a digicam. early this year, i discovered my casio digicam’s lens cover can’t b
e opened so sent to the shop. the staff said to remove totally the lens cover and instead use a lens film for me. together with the film and cleaning of the digicam, i was charged RM150.
then the weekend while i was in johor for a workshop, i discovered something wrong with it – either a vertical line of light appears or the whole picture will appear very bright and very white. funny… sometimes this will happenned, sometimes the pictures will be normal. anyway lots of friends advised to buy a new digicam instead of sending this for repair as not worth it… so i did. bought one… one that is much better that my previous casio digicam. but i still need lots of time to get used to all the features. i had already taken lots of pictures with it but found some pictures did
n’t turned out right… that is because i’m not familiar with the digicam yet. well, hope in time i will get used to the features and use them and managed to have good, beautiful, clear pictures. reading the manual is kind of confusing as some technical terms here and there i don’t understand. i wonder if there is a crash course in photography? just a few hours.
NOTE: the citizen journalists graduation night photos (taken with this digicam) can be view on my facebook photo album. also see shuf’s facebook album for more better clearer photos.

Seriously , as an amateur , you should have bought a new compact camera say, like Olympus / Casio / or Fujifilm 7x zooms or so for less than RM1000, weighing half of what you have here and can put inside your side pocket ! Once you set it to Intelligent auto mode , nothing can go wrong ! Those so called big cameras are useless if you do not know how to use their many fancy features

wits
the cam uses double A battery, not triple A. the batteries that i ‘inherited’ when i bought the cam, so the seller told me are very good quality ones. the brand is IMEDION powerex and it is 2100mAH. the batteries went KO on sat. afternoon, after i had been using it (of and on) for friday evening reporting and saturday morning reporting, taking over 100 photos! (but of course before those 2 days i had also been using it already).
sample picture? well see, the red xmas tree in one of my post about being busy? that was taken by this cam. then the facebook photo album link i have here, were photos taken by this cam too during our CJ graduation night. i made a mistake of setting the cam to night mode to take and a few turned out with few streaks of lights across. a friend advised me not to use night mode but just use flash. when using night mode one has to be very steady and slowly take the shot but i was taking the shots in a hurry.
leng, this cam is for amateur too. an amateur who wants to improve on his/her photo quality. as i said since i’m doing a lot of reporting i need a better cam. this cam is not heavy at all. it is only 435g and i put it in my everyday backpack, it doesn’t really add a lot of weigh to my backpack. as you see the description here
http://www.olympusimage.com.my/products/compact/sp_series/sp590uz/
it was designed with lots of features BUT to be light.
not knowing the many fancy features doesn’t mean it will stay that – one can learn up the features.

Ooops…yes Lucia, it’s double A, I mistyped.
Do you have rechargeable ones as well that comes with some cameras? However, the rechargeable ones(non alkali) don’t hold charge as well – from my experience with rechargeable batteries. Also it takes a long time to recharge.
