hoo-haa over wi-fi

when the penang state government first announced ‘wireless penang‘ project, i was overjoyed and am counting for the day when penang would go fully wireless.

however, it seems that there were some ‘wet blankets’ (well many in fact) who do not support the project… because they said wi-fi provides a potential health risk.

huh? what’s wrong with these people? why are they so afraid of the radiation from wi-fi? don’t they know that everyday they had already been exposed to radiation… and right at home too. the microwave oven, the TV and oh yeah, the computer. and of course the one thing you can’t live without - your handphone! i read somewhere that handphone emit more radiation waves then wi-fi!

our CM, lim guan eng was quite annoyed at those who critcise the ‘wireless penang project’ and had hit out at them as seen in malaysiakini. this got the president of the consumer association of penang to hit back… but he had some good points there in his letter to malaysiakini.  well, i suppose the government is listening, as the latest news we heard is that the government will continue study on wi-fi health risks.

well, to me, i don’t think there will be health risks at all. you will notice in susan loone’s blog, many of her commenters had scorned at the health risks, some saying that if people want to complain about wi-fi, why don’t they complain about handphone! or vehilces on the road that emits all sort of pollution! those are much worst health risk. go and read her blog for more ‘enlightment’ on this issue (and you can also read anil netto’s from that post of hers).

note: also read anil netto’s latest post on this issue.

Why not all the penang fellas throw away their TVs ( esp those technologically modern ones like LCD and Plasma ), microwave ovens, computers, and the most harmful of all the mobile phone ( which may indirectly cause accidents, stress, ect….) .

i feel that these complainants have “proxies” behind them. Who would lose the most if Penang has free Wifi? Telekom? Wifi Operators? ISPs You do the math.

30 days ago, who in this country would have ever thought that sweets and milk would be tainted with melamine? So, don’t be too surprised if innocent-looking devices will be found to emit harmful radiation

BTW, it is interesting to note that San Francisco Expands Free Wi-Fi to the Tenderloin District.

      Sep 18, 2008, News Report

Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, recently announced the expansion of Wi-Fi 2.0 to residents of the Tenderloin District, a historically down-scale neighborhood. In the technology lab of St. Anthony’s new LEED certified building, Newsome highlighted the city’s effort to bridge the digital divide and bring free broadband Wi-Fi to all San Franciscans……..

SF is already very heavily wi-fi-ed.
Are they more reckless than CAP’s standard?
