Opposition plans one-on-ones for Penang

Opposition parties DAP and PKR today presented a united front in announcing their battle plan to wrest Penang from Barisan Nasional in the coming general election.
The two parties have inked a deal to ensure that the opposition will face one-to-one contest with BN in the frontline state.
Under the agreed arrangements, DAP – which for long have aspired to rule Penang – will contest seven out of 13 parliamentary seats and 19 out of 40 state seats in the next general election.
PKR and the other opposition party PAS will be negotiating for the remaining seats.
At a press conference held in Penang this morning, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said both his party and PKR reached the agreement not to contest for the same seats following their meeting on Monday.
Lim said both political parties had agreed to cooperate closely whether at the national or state level to ensure victory for the opposition candidates in the general election this time around.
"Both parties have reached a consensus. It’s time to get down to serious work to ensure success for us in Penang in the coming poll," said Lim.
When asked on the reason as to why DAP has reduced the number of state seats – in 2004 it contested in 20 state seats – Lim said that the party had “given in to politics of compromise and cooperation, rather than the `one-upmanship politics’ which marred previous electoral ties between both parties".
PKR’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim also told the same press conference that his party will now have to finalise the allocation for the remaining seats with Barisan Alternatif coalition partner PAS, adding that an announcement on the matter will be made on a later date.
"For the other seats involving PAS, a discussion will be held and a separate announcement will be made, and (we) hope the people will give their support to the DAP candidates so that they will win in the constituencies allocated to them," he said.
Anwar said the joint decision reached was based on the agreement of party members at the grassroots level to put up an opposition front in the next general election.
"We will make sure that it will straight face-off between us and BN in all seats, not only in Penang but throughout the country," he said.
Dividing the battlefront
The deal between the parties also allowed DAP to contest in the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat while PKR would contest in the Bukit Tambun state seat which falls under the Batu Kawan constituency.
The Batu Kawan seat has long been a thorn between DAP and PKR. In 2004, both the parties vied for this seat, resulting in the opposition vote being split and the BN candidate benefiting from it.
Another notable bargain in the allocation was the Pulau Tikus and Kebun Bunga seat exchange between DAP and PKR respectively.
When asked by journalists on why Batu Kawan seat was given to the DAP even though it was resisted by PKR members, Anwar said his party members would understand that one tend to win some lose some in negotiation to reach consensus.
In 2004, there were four three-cornered fights between DAP, PKR and BN, including the Batu Kawan seat. Other seats were all state seats – Bukit Tambun, Bagan Dalam and Sungai Pinang, all won by the BN.
The latest agreement would also result in DAP contesting in northern area of the island in predominantly Chinese-dominated seats while leaving PKR and PAS to concentrate on the Malay-majority seats in the south west of the island.
The plan would also naturally mean that DAP would be going to battle against MCA and Gerakan while the PKR/PAS combination will take on Umno.
The press conference this morning was also attended by DAP’s veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, PKR’s secretary general Khalid Ibrahim. The respective parties state leaders – DAP’s Chow Kon Yeow and PKR’s Zahrain Mohamed Hashim – were also present.
The DAP seats
Sungai Puyu assemblyperson and State DAP treasurer Phee Poon Boh said the compromise shall not be construed as a defeat to the DAP and victory to PKR.
"It’s a reflection of political reality today that to form the next Penang state government, all parties would need to compromise and work collectively to gain support of all voters irrespective of their race and religion to secure victory.
"The DAP can no longer just depend on Chinese votes to win seats. It needs both Malay and Indian votes as well," he said.
At the press conference, Chow and Zahrain signed an agreement on the finalised seat allocation, perhaps to ensure the parties abide by the contract.
In a statement later, Khalid said that the agreement between PKR and DAP can be pivotal in breaking the BN’s hegemony in the state.
“PKR will cooperate with all parties who are committed in changing the political landscape in Malaysia through democratic means to ensure a clean and efficient administration,” he said.
For the record, the parliamentary seats to be contested by DAP in Penang are Bagan, Bukit Mertajam, Batu Kawan, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong and Bukit Gelugor.
The state seats given to DAP in Penang are Sungai Puyu, Bagan Jermal, Bagan Dalam, Berapit, Padang Lalang, Perai, Jawi, Tanjong Bunga, Air Putih, Pulau Tikus, Padang Kota, Pengkalan Kota, Komtar, Datok Keramat, Sungai Pinang, Batu Lanchang, Seri Delima, Air Itam and Paya Terubong.
At present, DAP has four parliamentary seats – Bagan, Bukit Mertajam, Tanjong and Bukit Gelugor – and one state seat, Sungai Puyu in Penang. PKR has one parliamentary seat in Permatang Pauh. PAS, meanwhile, won the Permatang Pasir state seat.

No way, Lucia. Gerakan didn’t do such a bad job and Penangites ain’t going to take any risks as DAP will not form the majority in the coalition with KeAdiLan. In the end, KeAdiLan, which is basically ex-UMNO will rule.
Ex-UMNO or UMNO, it’s nasi kandar.

“It could be wishful thinking, as MCA leaders have always believed that the way to secure the interests of the Chinese community is through quiet negotiations with UMNO leaders.”
Yes Mave, I think many Penangites still love Ah Koon so as to get themselves eaten last….after the MCA is consumed. They don’t trust others and have much self-interests to promote. They’re provincially idiosyncratic.

To answer your question .. one could hope, I guess. Interestingly, I had no idea I was ex-Umno

If this coalition can be sustained it might work. Penang was once an opposition stronghold until Gerakan ran along with UMNO. But this will depend primarily on the people of Penang. Being insular, they might not want any change. But if they feel change is needed, then they have to be brave and JUST DO IT. Australia and Britain wanted change and they got it. Do people in Penang want it badly…..like I always like to say, history is not what is written, History is what happened.

toni
true. i do hope too that the opposition might capture more seats.
mave and wits
well, lookie here, talk about penangites who do not want to risk change…. you two too seems to have the same kind of mentality of them…. because you keep on saying no way, no way, no way, being so pessimistic. ok you would have call it being realistic and asked me to stop dreaming. well i do agree that the opposition will NOT be able to capture penang.. but like bob, i hope. i do something about it… like toni pointed out “where blogs like yours will help one way or another”. on my blog, i try to make people see the ’sins’ of BN. i try to convince them to vote for the opposition.
yes i know that opposition will not capture penang but i hope that they can deny BN the 2/3 majority. that would be good enough for me (for a start). that’s why i’m glad to see this year, the opposition contesting for all the seats. the more seats they contest, of course the more seats they can win, which will give them a bigger margin win. (ya ya i know they might lose but as i said i prefer to look at the positive side).
btw wits are you sure many penangites love ah koon? (some might felt offended at that!). if they don’t want to vote opposition, it doesn’t mean they love ah koon. it simply means that they have that old thinking of only BN will provide them the stability.
bob
to me i don’t look to PKR as ex UMNO but i look to it as ‘anwar’s party’.
zorro
ah right! that’s the spirit i love to see/hear in people… not just mentioning about no way opposition gonna ever capture penang.
January 12th, 2008 on 3:22 PM
I don’t think DAP can take Penang, even with PKR’s help. But what I think will happen is that Gerakan is in danger of losing its chief ministership ti UMNO. Koh Tsu Koon is not helping Gerakan. His style of leadership (is there any leadership at all?) is making himself unpopular.
January 12th, 2008 on 9:07 PM
I have hoped that Penangites would have shown some spine in the past too many times and was completely disappointed. Therefore I’m very unsure if they now know how to grow one.
January 13th, 2008 on 10:21 PM
Lucia, for me, although I am a KLite, I honestly hope that the opposition will kick the butts out of the BN blokes out of Penang. Gerakan is a total embarassment. One thing which has been entrenched in my mind is Lim Keng Yaik seen applauding [like clapping with two hands ....] Mahathir’s announcement of the Islamic State during the Gerakan Convention in 2001. I will be rooting for both PKR and DAP in the coming GE for their eventual take over of the Penang state. Do you think it’s time to get the guillotine ready?

bayi
agree. true, realisitically it is impossible for DAP to take over penang but as i said we can always hope OR we can hope that DAP will capture more seats for penang. yes why can’t we hope that instead of whinning about penangites having no spine or love ah koon too much. yes i meant you, wits. your latest comment, you are insulting penangites again. you always look at the negative side only. you are always very pessimistic. yes, say your part about cowards penangites and all that but at the same time, say something positive too.
you may refer to them as without spine but do you know others might refer to them as ‘trying to survive’. a man will say he has a wife and 4 children to feed and his business is growing very well, he doesn’t need the opposition to come in to spoil all these. well since not all penangites think like you or i, if this is the way this penangite think, then i would have agree with him too. you can’t blame some people if they are scared of the opposition taking over.
it’s ok to criticise but at the same time of criticising, why don’t we do something like educating the penangites/public… well as toni once mentioned through blogs (he mentioned ‘where blogs like yours can help out’
, forums, websites and so on that we should give more votes to the opposition, that BN has been playing us out and so on.
billy
yes i wish that too… but as we all know, it is impossible for DAP to kick out ALL of BN, so let’s hope DAP will kick out more than the last election!
gerakan is totally under the control of UMNO. what bayi said may be a possibility – that the CM post may not go to gerakan but UMNO might want it. methink this could be one of the threat from UMNO to penangites – vote opposition, CM’s post goes to UMNO! but of course they won’t say that out in public (will they?). it will be some subtle message that only some people can catch.

Opposition can surely win if:
1. There are free n fair elections -this you can help by involving in election watch; Already an MP is said to be distributing 5kg rice to Rifle range …need confirmation. If true -this is offence under `Election Offences Act’ under provision of `no treating’ to voters. You can be our eyes and ears…
2. There are free media -to highlight KTK’s records as CM and to compare the candidates from both/all sides; Our media is 1-sided -but you can create more new media to tell the other side/both sides of the stories. No one can really stop you from doing it!

well said! maybe they can’t win entirely but at least they can start with denying BN the 2/3 majority. to ensure that BN do not get the 2/3 majority, let’s open our ears and eyes to be an election observer.
