this… is merdeka?

regular visitors would have notice that lately after each of my post, i ended with ‘apa ertinya 50 tahun merdeka?’ (translation: what is the meaning of 50 years of merdeka?).  this phrase came from a plantation worker in one of the estate in sg siput, perak, that i and friends from my church had interviewed. we interviewed them about their plight, of which they told us they had been fighting for their rights for more than 20 years and one of them said "apa ertinya 50 tahun merdeka bila pekerja-pekerja masih diabaikan?" (translation: what is the meaning of 50 years of merdeka when workers are still ignored?).

 this phrase – apa ertinya 50 tahun merdeka struck me and i began to ponder… yes, indeed, seeing what had been happening lately, what is the meaning of 50 years merdeka? malaysia is 50 years old already, mind you. that is 5 and 0 – fifty, 50. 50, is well according to the teens ‘old man/woman’. can you imagine, 50 years old already and malaysia still behaving like a child, like when they are in parliament – all those shouting matches and calling names. don’t you shudder to think these people are the ones who rule the country, set the laws and so to speak ‘control’ us?

so this year, despite being a golden jubilee, i have no heart to celebrate merdeka at all. so i’m sorry that on merdeka day i have to give such a negative post.

what is the meaning of 50 years merdeka…
– when… the government can so easily bail out port klang free trade zone
– when… charges against a certain datuk councillor can be drop just like that
– when… all of a sudden our PM and DPM tells us malaysia is an islamic state
– when… a young unknown man made a music video speaking the truth as he seen it, he gets all the attention from the cabinet (but no attention on the port klang fracas!) and the govt. wants to charge him.
– when… certain things (issues) suddenly we are slap with a gag order and the only persons who can talk about it are the PM and DPM
–  when… crime rates are escalating.

yes, so you tell me, what is the meaning of 50 years merdeka – apa ertinya 50 tahun merdeka? if you want a change, please make sure you are registered as a voter and go vote these people out!
