views from some malays on the UMNO GA
UPDATED: forgot to include this very good article from azly rahman, found on lim kit siang’s blog:
malay nationalism and post industrial tribalism
on the issue of those umnoputra screaming thier heads off on ‘don’t question our malay rights/islam’ – the recently ended UMNO ethnic bashing forum, remember?… here i append below some views from some malays themselves… those grassroots malays. i will only give excerpts… do read the entire article/post.
any of you notice that, that son-in-law recently in respond to people’s complains of their ethnic bashing, he said that they were only speaking up for the grassroot malays. he said something like the grassroot malays have no avenue to voice their opinion, so they were just speaking up for them. ha!! indeed!! who the hell is he to think he and his umno cronies were speaking for ALL malays? the nerve of him!! ok ok better not talk further about him because if i do, i will get so damn angry.

As a malay nasionalist with no apologies n a person who loves umno, what hisham and people like him did was a tragedy. It encapsulates a total lack of understanding of what Malay culture and tradition is all about and betrays the legitamate basis of Umno’s national struggle.
In one stroke they have done more harm to the Malays and Umno than all that Pas, DAP or coloniolism cud ever do- They have manage to make the Malays look like a bunch of marauding bandits and Umno like a thieve’s den! N to do a most unMalay act in the name of Umno n the Malays?!If this doesn’t qualify as a tragedy i don’t know what does!(i admit i m emotionally charged- i would be emotionally retarded if i wasn’t)

Ho hum… Another day, another amok. Perhaps it is no longer possible for us to wish for an UMNO General Assembly where the delegates would refrain from uttering the same lamentable slogan of ‘Malays in danger’. Perhaps it is too late for us to imagine of an UMNO assembly where the keris would not be unsheathed in public, accompanied by the familiar rhetoric of blood and belonging. Perhaps it is too late for us to hope that one day the leaders of UMNO would grow up and leave behind the colonial construction of the Malays of the past.
The recent UMNO General Assembly proved to be the predictable let-down that many had expected it to be. Despite the appeals of the leader of the party, and his reminder that Malaysia’s struggle for independence was a collective effort on the part of all communities, the baying echoes of the Malay heartland resonated time and again. The keris was unsheathed and stabbed heavenwards; and all talk was of insidious ‘threats’ and ‘conspiracies’ against the Malay race

abandon tribalism, UMNO
I feel compelled to comment on the ridiculous display of demagoguery on an annual basis by one of the largest political parties in the world.Malaysians agonize about the future of this country when Umno holds its annual general assembly, and with it comes the relentless ethnic and religious harangue, which if uttered under any other circumstance by any other person would be prima facie seditious.

The best actor is jointly shared by Hishammuddin Hussein Onn and his deputy, Khairy Jamaluddin. Their emotional portrayal of fictional Malay heroes brandishing the keris against some shadow enemy would give lightsabre wielding Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor a run for their money. Moreover, the display of thuggery matches up well with the characters in the Young and Dangerous trilogy.

head of MCA’s youth wing, said the statements made by
young Malay leaders at the general assembly were vicious.
“It is regretful that the Umno youth assembly was shrouded in an atmosphere
of fiery and emotional sentiments, remarks that were more poisonous and
unreasonable than those of the opposition,” said Liow, who is also a deputy
minister in the Abdullah government.
