no justice
====================
wanted to post this last night but i was not at home and thus have no internet access. for these few days i will not be at home and might not have internet access, so i guess there won’t be much blogging from me…. unless if i stay back in office to blog. oh, and sorry, no time to reply your comments too. maybe i’ll do it later in the evening.
====================
one of the hot news going on now is the moorthy’s case. i know…. much had been said already, and as usual, i’m always late to come in with my say. much had been reported in the media here and there (foreign media too!), and many people had their say in blogs, forums, malaysiakini and so on. notable posts from bloggers on this issue are from politics101 and rajan.
although much had been said, i still want to blog on it because this is one issue i feel strongly about. i feel very strange and uneasy to see that where religion is suppose to be a personal matter, the authorities had to butt in. it’s strange, scary and in some way funny, to see the tussle between moorthy’s wife and the islamic authorities for moothy’s body to be buried. ok never mind that, but what is even more scary is the fact that non muslim have no legal redress at all when it comes to matter concerning islam all because of the syariah court. non muslim should not be represented at the syariah court. this is grossly unfair to non muslim. shouldn’t then matters where a muslim and a non muslim parties are concerned be refer to the civil court?
rightly so, it should, so as minister in the PM dept, nazri, pointed out:
“When a dispute arises over whether a person has become a Muslim convert, it makes sense for the case to be heard in a civil court”D
and
“The question in Moorthy’s case was whether he was indeed a Muslim in the first place.
“If we let the Muslim court decide this, justice might not be served because it would decide in favour of Islam.”
read the full report in NST or beritamalaysia.
nazri, in the report here, had echo my sentiments.
another good say came from someone with the handle chez78, a name known by many bloggers. to quote him, his last paragraph, says it all:
Whether you are a muslim or a non-muslim, this much is clear – the law tries to separate us, but life is less black and white than the legal ink dictates. Common sense and human justice are but some of the universal values that transcend religious boundaries. When a conversion robs a wife of her husband or a mother of her children, something is definitely not right with our country. When human faith is regulated to fit nicely into squares, the law is used to divide rather than to unite us.
read his letter in full in screenshots.
it’s good to hear too that the other religious leaders are speaking up like claiming that islamic authorities are eroding their religious rights and challenging islamic legal system. i hope this would caught the attention of our PM, and for god’s sake, do something about it.
