hooray! finally on broadband!

hoorray! i finally have broadband after about 100 days of applying for it. Now i can be online all the time now and don’t have to worry about money ticking away.

i made my streamyx application during a computer fair in early april through a reseller. it was the RM66 package (318kbps speed) without modem, but the promo from the reseller was that they can give me a modem with RM50 off, so i grab the offer and signed up. however after signing up, i waited and waited, and there was no news. it was after the last few months that i saw my internet bill always over RM70, i decided to check with telekom. telekom had received my application and they said they can activate my streamyx anytime but i must purchase the modem first.

i was lucky that when i asked my brother to check modem prizes for me, it so happened he said he has a spare modem from his friend, who do not wish to use it anymore, so i get the modem from my brother free!! and he did the installation for me too! all free! just imagine earlier i was thinking of a RM150 modem and with installation fee RM50… to pay RM200 but now i don’t have to pay a single cent. well ihave to pay for the network card only at RM38.00

the modem that my brother got for me is an aztech DSL 906-EU USB ethernet router (and it’s quite a new one, though used… and heard that a new one will cost near RM200).

i know there had been many complaints on streamyx and people had been coming up with all sorts of name for it e.g stream-my-ass, stream-ass, scream-as and so on. well i had been using it for 2 days, so far ok. the speed is not exactly much faster than dial-up though (oh dear, one complaint already!). btw, i took the RM66 for 316kbps package. one good thing i like is of course it’s always on connection.

I made my streamyx application during a computer fair in early april through a reseller. it was the RM66 package (318kbps speed) without modem, but the promo from the reseller was that they can give me a modem with RM50 off, so I grab the offer and signed up. however after signing up, I waited and waited, and there was no news. it was after the last few months that I saw my internet bill always over RM70, I decided to check with telekom. telekom had received my application and they said they can activate my streamyx anytime but I must purchase the modem first.

since the reseller had promised me a discounted price modem, I thought I should contact the reseller. well, problem is I don’t have the contact details of the reseller. don’t even remember the name. but luckily the telekom staff have the name and tel. no. of the reseller, so I phone the reseller, one mr lim (say to be from some company with name like broadband corp. or something like that) to enquire and was shocked to hear that mr lim said they are in butterworth (at the house of internet near sunway hotel) and I have to go over there to purchase the modem. how can? I am not familiar at all with the places in butterworth. so mr lim said he will see when his staff come over to penang island for some sales promo or something, then ask his staff to bring the modem for me. ok fine. I asked him to hurry as I said telekom had hurried me, saying my application dated early april, now must have it activated fast or else they will cancel my application. he said ok but do you know, I waited for 2 weeks and no news from him at all. stupid reseller! like he’s not interested at all. indeed. when I tell him to contact me if they happen to be in penang island, he said ok ok but he never ask for my phone number!! I had to give it to him! well you see, after 3 weeks, there was no news from him at all. so, through the advise of someone from mypdacafe forum, I decided to ditch this idiot reseller.

I decided to look around for a modem. again. someone in mypdacafe recommend me a mr X, saying he got a basic aztech ADSL 306U USB modem for less than RM150. I did not see the word ‘LESS than RM150’. I thought it was AT RM150. so when I phone mr X on 6 july, Tuesday, and said the modem at RM150, naturally he was happy to note I myself put the modem price at RM150 (ya I know I was kind of stupid. but of course at that time I don’t know yet the modem was suppose to be LESS than RM150, not AT RM150). so he said he can give me the modem at RM150 and come install for me. I asked how much he charge for installation, he said “you just give me what you like, some kopi duit for my transport lah” mentioning ‘ku chap kor’ in hokkien which translate to at least RM10! say like RM10, RM20, RM30!!

so ok, as my streamyx line was activated already 5 days ago, I wanted the installation to be fast so I mentioned to him can he come tomorrow to install. then suddenly I remember I should ask my brother first whether he can install for me, so I told him er… no need to come tomorrow but I will contact him later.

well I contact my brother and he told me he has a friend who either giving it away or sell to him cheap, I don’t know lah, a modem, and he can find out whether he can get the modem on Friday. well so I decided to wait until Friday to see if he can get the modem. then suddenly on Thursday mr X phone and told me he bought the modem for me already and can come to install that day. I was shocked. I told him I didn’t confirm with him yet. but he thought I did confirm. I think he was pretty mad at me as he thought I confirmed and he had bought the modem. anyway I told him, I will let him know on Friday. well, on Friday when I checked with my brother, found out from him that he can get me a modem free, so naturally I won’t be buying from mr X.

in the meantime, while I was browsing through mypdacafe forum again, I suddenly realise the basic modem was LESS than RM150 and not AT RM150. then I saw some price list of modems, this same modem selling at KL’s low yat plaza at only RM105!! ah… I see that this mr X was not honest with me. in the first instance, when it should be less than RM150 but I mentioned RM150, he did no say anything. then I saw the price at KL only RM105. so on Saturday when I phone him to tell him I do not need the modem anymore, I also mentioned to him that the modem I saw the price at RM105 only why he was going to sell to me at RM150. he mumbled something about the price at KL… but even so, there shouldn’t be such a big difference. he was not an honest man, I see. want to charge me the modem for RM150 and also to extra charge for installation! when I told him at RM150 I don’t want as too expensive, he sound pissed off and hang up on me! wow! like that one…. not professional too! I know earlier he could be angry at me already as he thought I confirmed want his modem and he had already bought the modem for me but there I was, not wanting it. well from what I understand he’s quite a big-time seller of modems and other techie stuffs, so I’m sure he did not spend money for the modem, so why mad at me. (and also remember I told him I will contact him first). of forget him.

well my brother came to my house yesterday evening to install streamyx for me, and I notice the installation is quite easy and takes less than an hour. luckily I did not pay some other people RM50 to do the installation.

I’m happy that now I have streamyx but I hope there won’t be many problems that comes with it!
