‘moral police’ under fire

officers from the jabatan agama islam wilayah persekutuan (JAWI) raided a night spot, zouk, in KL on 12 jan., and on 23 jan. we heard of those being rounded up complaining on the high-handed attitudes of the JAWI officers in the malay mail. read also the news from beritamalaysia, of which there is a second article where a mother of one of the women complained.

interesting read there, especially on how the officers concentrating on the women, staring at them, making them twist and turn. so these ‘morality officers’ who were out there to keep an eye on the morality of muslims, were themselves guilty of immorality? well, staring at them lustfully and being crude can come under being immoral!

i’m sure earlier you must have heard of the 4B youth movement in malacca wanting to set up vigilante squads to spy on youths, like a peeping tom engaging in immoral activities. can you believe that? yes, you can…. but wait… there’s more… frightening indeed… those snoop squads plan to target youth of ALL religions. can you believe THAT??

i can’t understand for the life of me why we need moral police. who are they to tell the youth that they (youth) are behaving immorally? what right do they have? how do they judge what actions are immoral and what are not?

well, according to alfred north whitehead, english mathematician and philosopher, he had this to say, “what is morality in any given time or place? it is what the majority then and there happen to like, and immorality is what they dislike.”
