maid’s abuse

malaysians were shocked when they woke up on a sunday thursday morning, open the paper, and staring at them on front page, were pictures of an indonesian maid who was severely abused by her woman employer. the popular screenshots by jeff ooi, had a post on it, and it had drawn more than 100 comments in just a few hours (including mine – 2 comments). i was quite perturbed that many of the commentaries there made reference to the abuser as animal. unfortunately this had been the case all along. example the rapist of canny on was refer as an animal. please! for goodness sake, do not insult the animals kingdom. animals are much more well behaved than humans. a commentator in jeff ooi’s blog, hari, made this very appropriate meaning ful comment: pls don’t compare the person(s) who did this with animals and insult the animals…animals don’t torture other animals…they do kill and hurt others… yes for survival..to eat…not to vent out frustration or for revenge or for some stupid belief…..animals seem to have drawn the short straw…humans destroy their world and then use them as anology for human failings… coming back to the abuse of the indonesian maid, my friend, martin jalleh had written a piece about it, saying he felt ashamed of being a malaysian when this news was made known. well, the federal police CID director datuk musa hassan, had also described this news as a national shame, when he informed they were investigating whether the husband was indirectly involved in the abuse case. i hope this case won’t get swept under the carpet after everybody had gotten over their shock and shame. something concrete need to be done to ensure this kind of abuse doesn’t happen again. but what? how? how to make sure abuse of maids won’t happen again? it is a difficult task indeed. in my comments on jeff ooi’s blog, i agree with someone who suggested that employers of maid should be scrutinised, not only the maids. if a strict check is put on the maids, why not on the employers too? who knows some employers may have a past criminal record or some psychological disturbance before. they are surely not fit to be employers of maid as there is a high chance they might end up abusing the maid. what do you think of this idea? or what other suggestion do you have?
