christmas = capitilisation sans god
ahh… in 5 days time and it will be that time of the year again… the christmas season… ahh… christmas, the season of peace and joy, sadly had been turned into also a season of capitilisation and commercialism. (btw, the heading of this post came from a reader of lone’s blog, tua kia). yes lone had blogged on christmas days before me, and he had a good link there for you to check how chrismas came to be and other stuffs re: christmas.
what is christmas about? everybody knows it is the birthday of jesus christ, yet everybody (well, most people i mean, not all) forget jesus in the course of the celebration. you know, if mary, the mother of jesus, had a dream about his son’s birthday in this age, this is what her dream would probably be.
christmas in this age, as i mentioned just now, are capitilisation and commercialsm, but the true meaning of christmas does not consists of these two C’s but more on these three C’s.
christmas which is a religious festival, rich in meaning, has now been hijacked by business people looking for an opportunity to make money and by party animals who enjoy dancing and drinking the night away. it really irks me when i hear that non christians celebrate christmas. do you hear non muslims celebrate hari raya puasa? do you hear non hindus celebrate deepavali? you don’t right? then why should non christians say they celebrate christmas? oh I know… they just want to have fun, that’s all, an excuse for them to spend spend spend and party party party. ok i’d better not lecture too much on this matter ‘else next thing you’ll see me turning into PAS and calling for a ban to public christmas celebration.
so what is christmas about in the religious view? read here and here, looking out for the first poem.
you know, long ago i used to get irritated when people use ‘xmas’ instead of ‘christmas’. why replace ‘christ’ with an unknown person X, i asked annoyingly. then later on i learn that X is actually the greek word for christ.
the word, “christmas” is a shortening of the christ’s mass, the celebration of christ’s birthday. and why was 25 december chosen as christ’s birthday? no one really knows but there are some theories here and there.
long ago in my house i used to put up a christmas tree every year but after some time i began to think christmas is not about christmas tree but about the child jesus, so instead i put up a crib. a crib is more meaningful than a tree because when my non christian friends come a visiting, and they see the crib instead of a tree, i can have the opportunity to tell them this is what christmas is all about – baby jesus being born into the world.
well when christmas comes along soon, spare a thought for the…
…baby born in a stable more than 2000 years ago, ok
