Highlights from Aliran Monthly – Issue 9, 2003

Editor’s Note – Issue 2003:9

This month’s lead story by P Ramakrishnan takes a look at the political transition in the post-Mahathir era. Will the “next change”- the Barisan Nasional under Abdullah Badawi – have a radically different script or will it just be a re-run of the old “show”, he wonders.

Author John Hilley follows this with a critical anaylsis of Mahathirism, which he places in the context of current global political trends – including the crisis of confidence facing Messrs Bush and Blair. Malaysians, he suggests, must work towards “new politics” by comprehensively reforming – rather than merely patching up – the existing corrupt and decaying system.

Aliran member Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj looks back at Mahathir’s tenure, pointing out that outgoing premier has seriously undermined vital institutions such as the judiciary and the police.

Another new book by former communist leader Chin Peng has sparked renewed interest in this almost legendary figure, who remains in exile. S Arutchelvan urges the Malaysian government to allow him to return home to Malaysia as a gesture of compassion and humanity.

Another controversy surrounds the excessive expense claims made by MPs. Ramakrishnan calls for a full disclosure of the claims of all MPs including the Prime Minister.

Look out for the statement by Anwar Ibrahim, who slams the judicial system over the delays and inconsistencies in his trial. Finally, don’t miss Thinking Allowed in which we take a thought-provoking look at the cardinal virtues that have been the hall-mark of Mahathir’s Barisan Nasional: patriotism, gratitude and loyalty.
