today, last day at malaysiakini
yes, today will be the last day of our advanced citizen/video journalism training at malaysiakini office.
on saturday and sunday, we had two very good speakers. saturday, janet steele, (pic below) who is associate professor of media and public affairs based in US was the speaker. her session was on narrative journalism.
saturday we had well-known local reporter, m. krishnamoorthy (pic below, standing) to speak to us on investigative journalism.
some of you might remember him as the journalist from the star paper who went undercover a few times e.g. posing as a wheelchair user, a candidate for election and a business man hailing taxis. do a google search on his name plus undercover and you’ll find them all.
today will be the last day where sean ang from malaysiakini will talk to us about expanding reach through internet like using blogging and web 2.0. then it will end up with some discussion on the direction of citizen journalism and also the synergy between citizen journalism and malaysiakini.
krishnamoorthy’s session was based a lot on the book he and p.c. shivadass wrote ‘the you in journalism’ (a handbook for journalists). it was a very good book as i can see since it is so compact with lots of useful information for journalists.
i’m proud that i’m among the penang first batch of malaysiakini’s citizen/video journalism training. the basic training was in jan. and feb. with about 20 of us. this is advanced where 6 of us were selected. KL already had 3rd batch. penang’s 2nd batch is coming soon. any of you in penang interested? .
a final pic – of the bangunan sultan abdul samad. this was one of the assignment we had to tod – go out capture still video pictures of ‘KL as i see it’. i had rajen and shan as my team members and both of them videod the bangunan sultan abdul samad and the dataran merdeka, while i just scanned through the whole view with the basic ‘flip video’ borrowed from malaysiakini. i took lots of pictures with my own camera. since i’m no good (or rather not really interested) in video editing, i did not do any shooting for editing but leave it to the expert, shan to do it. i did try narration and had spent almost 2 hours figuring how to put in voice with the pictures but i don’t know how! hmm… i must go back to basic training to learn how to edit video! 🙂
