so what were wee and zahrain doing there at the forum???

Gov’t DC charm offensive goes behind closed doors

A high-profile seminar on the Malaysian government and judiciary in Washington DC by a prominent international think-tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) was strangely turned into a closed-door event.

The seminar titled ‘Governance and Rule of Law in Malaysia’ featured prominent Malaysian government officials before an audience of US government officials, activists, diplomats and Malaysian expatriates.

In the CSIS announcement sent out last week, it stated that the two-hour seminar was “on the record”. But organisers made a U-turn on the matter.

Law Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz (right) was the sole Malaysian representative.

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s advisory panel chairperson Abdul Hamid Mohamad were also invited speakers but were absent.

Instead, Nazri’s entourage included an unsual mix of government and opposition federal lawmakers along with Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Ronald Kiandee.

The MPs present were Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Umno – Pasir Salak), Wee Choo Keong (PKR – Wangsa Maju), Zahrain Mohd Hashim (Independent – Bayan Baru) and Jamaluddin Jarjis (Umno – Rompin), who is also the Malaysian ambassador to the US.

Expectedly, the US audience and press were particularly keen on questioning the government’s handling of the on-going Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial and was thus disappointed with Abdul Gani’s absence and the organiser’s request for the seminar to be kept off the record.

Ex-envoy: Strange seminar

Before the seminar commenced, senior adviser and director of the CSIS Southeast Asia Program Ernest Bower barred attempts by Malaysiakini to record the session on video.

When told that the invitations for the seminar did not specify that the seminar was a closed event, Bower brushed it off by saying that it was quite normal for CSIS seminars to be kept off the record.

Seminar participant and former US envoy to Malaysia John R Malott told Malaysiakini that the seminar was the “strangest” that he had attended in Washington DC.

“I found it unusual that the session was off-the-record. This is very rare for a Washington think-tank,” he said.

“The seminar was very strange because there were supposed to be three speakers, but throughout, only one person, Minister Nazri, was there. Abdul Gani never came at all.”

Malott (left) said he had hoped Abdul Gani would be present because he had specific questions regarding the conduct of the prosecution team in Anwar’s sodomy trial.

He said that the prosecution is required by law to give the defence team whatever evidence necessary for the accused to mount a defence but prosecutors are doing the exact opposite.

“How can they convince us (that it is a fair trial) when they withhold vital information needed defend someone. In America there is no question about this. It will be certainly hard to convince us that this trial is fair,” he said.

Seminar cut short

During his 40-minute speech, Nazri spoke about laws in Malaysia which promotes good governance and how he was instrumental in the formation of the National Integrity Plan, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and other instruments to curb graft.

Nazri also lauded Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s commitment towards combating graft and promoting good governance. He added that he would resign if Najib ever interferes with the MACC.

Before the question-and-answer session began, Amnesty International representative T Kumar urged the seminar organisers to open up proceedings to the press.

“That is the right thing to do,” said Kumar, who is the Amnesty International’s Asia and Pacific advocacy director.

Despite Nazri’s nod of approval, Bower replied with a firm “no”, adding that he will not backpedal on his decision.

Following this, Nazri was quizzed on the sodomy trial, the Internal Security Act and the controversy surrounding the use of the term ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims.

Before he answered the question about the ‘Allah’ controversy, Nazri told the Malaysiakini reporter not to report his answer before his lengthy reply.

Bower abruptly ended the brief 20-minute session after Nazri answered the third question. According to Bower, the Malaysian entourage had to rush off to another engagement.

PKR MP’s participation not unusual

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution described Wee’s presence at the event as nothing out of the ordinary.

“I do not think that it is peculiar because it is very normal for MPs to go on delegations, whether the opposition or the government. In fact, my last trip to Japan was with Parliament speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia and other MPs from BNBC (Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club).

“We cannot stop CSIS from inviting us. But we do have our stand on the speech given (at the seminar). However, the participation by our MPs is not against Pakatan Rakyat’s stand. So I think that it is perfectly normal for Wee to attend the event.”

- someone said muslim are the majority, so the rights of the majority must be respected. hehe! what a joke! (what nonsense! minority has no rights? no say? something so important and big issue as this so as to go to court should not merely hinge on ‘the majority’.)

- someone asked why all of a sudden the church wants to use allah. hoho!! what a joke! (the church had many many years back been using allah already).

- someone said that now the christian missionaries will use allah, confusing muslim and undermining religious harmony. LOL! what a joke! (whoa!! who are you to say the muslim will be confused? you mean you don’t trust them… you think their faith is so weak? undermining religious harmony? well for a start, allah does not belongs exclusively to muslim, so can be use by anyone, and if you prevent others to use it, then it is you who is underming religious harmony!)

outside the protest,

the perak mufti provided the laugh too when he said the court’s decision is an insult to all muslim. hehe! what a joke! (whoaa!! i believe it is the other way round. you in saying that are insulting the muslim.)

and shahrizat, the umno wanita chief said:
- “actually non-muslims in the country accept the fact that the word ‘allah’ belongs to muslims. haha! what a joke! (who say so? go take a survey! many non muslim had voiced allah does not BELONGS to muslims!)

i thought it was the police who is intimidating PR when they lodged report against penang’s CM, lim guan eng (LGE). i find it very strange that just because teoh beng hock’s ex boss, ean yong hian wah spoke up to ask the police to stop investigating LGE, the police suddenly felt intimidated and going to haul him up for questioning.  no freedom of speech? why, many DAP leaders had also urged the police to stop its investigation on LGE… so is the police going to haul all of them up for questioning too? what lah, the police so free ah to haul up MPs and ADUNs while criminals are out there having a field day, not being hauled up!

ok of course everybody know this is selective persecution. why picked on LGE? because he’s from DAP. because he’s not a umnoputra!

the police made a report against him (sounds funny, doesn’t it?) because he had said that teoh beng hock was murdered… but wait haven’t we heard so many people, including MPs too saying that? i recalled the few forums i attended on justice for teoh beng hock, almost all the speakers (from DAP, PKR, PAS) hinted teoh beng hock was murdered. and of course we read from so many bloggers and commenters on blogs/websites that also said teoh beng hock was murdered – so why didn’t the police lodged police report (sounds funny eh?) against them? why didn’t the police hauled all of them up for questioning? oh yeah, remember the thai pathologiest – she also said there is a 80% possibility beng hock was murdered. why was she not hauled up for saying that?

the selangor police chief, khalid abu bakar had said that LGE should not made unsubstantiated remarks. well, remember in the beginning, nazri had said that beng hock jumped from the window – wasn’t he making unsubstantiated remark too? so why wasn’t he investigated? because he’s from umno!

khalid  said that what LGE said was seditious. oh yeah? don’t made me laugh. compare to what utusan malaysia always came up with, what LGE said was nothing at all! utusan malaysia had came out with very very seditious comments and yet the police do nothing… becuase utusan malaysia belongs to umno.  see, selective persecution.

oh… and isn’t what khalid is doing now confirming to us the police is under umno and the police is on a blitz persecuting PR?

3) rosli sulaiman, president of federal territory bumiputera traders association, said the anti ISA rally had been “traumatic” to the traders, both to their profits and psyche.

4) PEWARIS chief economic advisor annuar zaini, said that the bad press from the rally had already lowered malaysia’s economic sovereignty rating. tourists and foreign investors are already shying away from the country, the damages amounted to “not in the millions… but billions” of ringgit.
He warned anti-ISA rally organisers that if Malaysia’s foreign direct investments were to show a decline in the next three months, “Pewaris shall hunt them down” and make them pay for it.

5) finally, this made me laughed the most. it was so silly and funny. mohd khairol azam abdul aziz, president of young malays graduate coalition, the same clown (horror! a lawyer, a graduate and a young man??) mentioned at no. 1 above, is suing the police for failure to prevent the rally, because according to him he suffered a “loss of reputation as a father” in failing to fulfil his promise to take his children out shopping in sogo that day. ROTFL! he had to choose THAT DAY to go shopping AT SOGO with his children? ROTFLMAO!!

yes, why ban the sale of alcohol when there are others who don’t feel it is wrong to drink it? hey, my church say it is wrong to use condom… so am i and all my fellow christians going to ask for a ban on the sale of condom? or rather will my church leaders ask for the ban? certainly not! we will just NOT buy the condoms though they are on sale. and if there are those who did buy it secretly, they have themselves to answer to god.

same logic applies to the sale of alcohol.

so, why want to ban the sale of alcohol?

one of my earlier post about them, mentioned about them apart from wearing the ‘yes to ISA’ t-shirt (back), a picture show two of them with a sash that read ‘hidup melayu, hidup islam’ (long live malays, long live islam), and i asked what has ISA to do with malays and islam. that picture shows only the back of their t-shirt. then i notice in the sunday star, there was a picture of mohd khairul, legal adviser of MAGARAN (majlis gabungan NGO pembela negara, which comprises some 50 organisations that support the ISA in the ‘kekalkan ISA’ t-shirt which shows the front, i suddenly notice below the word ‘ ISA’ there is this small words that read:

PERTAHANKAN HAK-HAK KEISTIMEWAAN ORANG MELAYU (protecting malays’ special rights)

huh? ISA is an institution that defends the malay’s special rights? or it is, it is the rights of the malay to have ISA? whatever, means the same… that these clowns from MAGARAN thinks that ISA is specially for malays, that malays live for ISA (that’s what i gather anyway)… or worst… like berita hairan saying MACC is a malay institution, they think ISA is a malay institution, therefore they have to defend ISA. haven’t you notice that their group consists of ALL malaysa while GMI (and anti ISA group) consists of multi-racial.

this mohd khairul is really a clown. i near wanna puke when i read that he called for the 3 top PR leaders (namely anwar, lim kit siang, abdul hadi awang to be arrested under ISA. oh, and also GMI chairperson, syed ibrahim, a nice friendly man whom i had met before twice under his capacity as chairman of MAFREL (malaysian for free and fair election).

mohd khairul was heard to say:

The four, it added, should be detained in connection with Saturday’s rally in Kuala Lumpur, which saw tens of thousands of protesters taking to the streets to voice their objection towards the ISA.

Magaran legal adviser Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said the four should be arrested under the ISA for practicing ‘premeditated violence’ when organising the rally.

premeditated violence? look who’s talking! then what about your group who planned to organise the rally too? you guys chicken out at the last minute! can’t get the number eh… not even 1% to match the anti ISA group! or was it that all this was well planned – you guys pretend to say you want to organise a rally on the same day that GMI organised it, then last moment, pulled out?

Meanwhile, Khairul said GMI’s failure to adhere to police’s orders to cancel its street rally has led to the damage of public property and caused inconvenience to the people.

haha. why don’t you tell that to the police/FRU? it was they who caused the damage! by using tear gas and water canons! how on earth can a peaceful rally caused damage if they were left alone. anyway, wasn’t it that you and your group had planned for the street rally on that day too??

He added that Magaran is in the process of compiling evidence of the losses incurred by businessmen and the public.

This will be used as a basis to initiate legal action against GMI.

as i had blog yesterday, the losses incurred by the businessmen were caused by the police and not the protesters. what legal action? don’t make me laugh. you think this stupid idea of evidence collected can hold as a basis to initiate legal action? *sigh* there’s one born every minute. oops. i might talk too soon as looking at our kangaroo court, who knows, the kangaroo might, uh oh i mean the court might accept that as evidence!!

grrr!! so angry to hear of this news lah!

i’m talking about how 900 cops turned up for DAP’s dinner on saturday night, with water canon trucks too.

it was just a simple dinner with speakers, what is there to fear, mr IGP?  why sent so many cops and why confiscated their PA system?

the police had already issued DAP permit to have the dinner but all of a sudden, at the 11th hour, they revoked the permit. is that fair or what??

why is the police afraid of a dinner with ceramah? oops. correction. should say ‘opposition dinner with ceramah’ instead. if it is a dinner by UMNO with ceramah, they police will NOT EVER NEVER touch them.

as DAP’s charles santiago said, the dinner was simply a get-together for family and friends… ok, throw in speakers… still what harm can it do? the klang OCPD was so arrogant when he said:

“We advised them to not give speeches and if they do so, we will arrest them.”

“advised”? why? is it unlawful to give speeches? and there they go again – arrest! every little thing arrest people. (remember the black shirt, the people having drinks near the perak state assembly building, the candlelight vigil, etc). they sure are going on an arresting spree… for all the wrong reasons.

why the police always like to target DAP? remember the time when DAP’s headquarters was raided by the police?

grrr! i don’t want to continue anymore as i’m so mad.
